If you can flip this to a poll, you'll get more answers. I have a VC Type 2 with custom glass carriers made with Denglas, and fortunately, a very bright head.

I have two pieces of Denglas, hinged at the back, drilled on one side with two holes, matching pins on the other (setup mates with my existing Kodak film punch) and a set of matte-black masks from 35mm to 5x7 (actually 13x18cm). For casual printing, I put unpunched film up against the pins, close the sandwich, and put the mask on top of the upper glass plate. I've used it for many years with no complaints.

I too have a Zone VI VC enlarger and love it. Purchased used, the original owner bought one of the first built. Still works great! Have only had to replace the guiding track on the column, that was quite the job. Can't seem to stop all light leaks around the head, but they dont seem to interfere with end results.

This is the one I had Richard make for me. It works well, but if I were designing another one, I would incorporate alignment pins for my Kodak punch, just as TimVermont has done.

I seldom do masking, but when I do I use a setup similar to what TimVermont uses.... one piece of glass with a pin-set taped on, and covered with another piece of glass which is slightly narrower to miss the pin-set.

8x10 enlarger

I recently landed an 8x10 head for the Zone vi enlarger. Does any one have an extra (not likely) chimney and carrier or at least a picture with dimensions and/or details?

Thanks
Eric

Are you going to be printing 8x10 negs? If not, the chimney is not a necessity.

Anyone have a type 2 lensboard with a 42mm hole?

I have a chimney I am not using; but plan to hang on to it, just in case. I adapted the 8x10 head for 5x7 and smaller.

I got a good deal on a Type II last December (2008). Needed a 50mm lensboard; Calumet had lots of 25mm lensboards in stock, & drilled it to 50mm. Contact them--they might have 42mm stock or be able to drill one for you.

I used to covet the Zone VI until I read of all the problems. I passed on a new one a few years back being sold at Calumet store. The 'BEST DAMN ENLARGER IN THE UNIVERSE" is apparently ok, but forall I have heard no better than Omega or Beseler. Having never seen them it sounds to me as if a couple of european brands are probably better, stuff like Durst etc. but the prices here used to be enormous. After all, it's just a projector for different sizes of film. Basically a really simple machine.

While I own and like my Type II, I don't recommend them. The lack of parts, acessories and support compaired to Beseler and Omega makes them undesirable in my opinion.

I've repaired and aligned an entire lab full of Omega D Series enlargers. They all have three things in common: poor quality screws, light leaks and few built-in provisions for alignment. My type II has none of these problems.

Zone VI VC Head for Beseler

I recently picked up a Zone VI VC head for Beseler without any instructions so I am trying to figure out how to connect everything. It came with the Variable Contrast controller that connects to the head with the telephone cord but nothing else. It does not have a separate power supply.

  • Is the power supply in the head itself?
  • Do I just need a power cord with a female end to plug into the top of the head? Is that "Power" cord for a heater?
  • What is the mouse-like connection port for?

Thanks.
