I have a zone vi compensating timer (not the enlarger timer, the process timer) and I unplug it when I'm loading film in the darkroom.

When I plugged it back in this last time, the timer started going whacky. It no longer compensates for temperature at the wand, it just counts as fast as it can.

I've tried a few things, like unplugging it again etc and nothing works.

Any ideas?

Check the connection for the temperature probe (which is a modular telephone-type plug). Unplug the probe and plug it back in being sure that the plug seats securely in the socket. Mine went wacky on me not long ago. Turned out that the unit had gotten jostled about and the probe connection was poor/intermittent. Your comment suggests that the probe may well be involved.
