I believe the Nettar was made, in various versions (6x9, 6x6, 6x4.5), from 1937 until 1943-44. Your model with prefix 'J' indicate manufacture 1938-39. Some models had serial numbers stamped inside the film chamber.
The KL stamp is interesting as it is mentioned that extra letters mean the camera was sent back to the factory for repair or modification. So the KL would indicate the camera went back to the factory in 1939 for some reason.
I'm sure the other camera has the serial number somewhere but Zeiss Ikon did not seem to have a standard position, I believe some had the serial number on the lens shutter assembly.
A very late reply to you, sorry! I'm glad the serial number turned up in the same spot. Had it not been for your query, I'd never have taken another look at mine to find it. I just always assumed the earlier (and in my case, very basic) models didn't have one. So, thank YOU!
