I am selling a pre-war 5cm F1.5 Zeiss Sonnar for Contax rangefinder mount. The pre-war Sonnar's are uncoated lenses, and that is actually one reason some discerning shooters seek them out. The condition of this lens is as follows:
1) The filter thread is damaged beyond repair disallowing the use of threaded filters. The lens will probably still accept common 42mm push-on filters, hoods, and other accessories, but I've not actually tried it. This is the main issue with the lens.
2) The glass is substantially clear and clean as seen in normal lighting.
3) Oil is present on the iris blades. This actually prevents them from developing rust.
4) The very demanding bright flashlight test shows a handful of long thin scratches on the rear element, a very fine fiber on some internal element, and perhaps some speckles or internal dust layers, but faint. The fiber can be seen on one of my posted photos.
5) I can see perhaps five of the charming and very tiny Zeiss glass bubbles, which were a normal consequence of the imperfect state of glass blank production technology at the time this was made, and are considered normal for Sonnars (these affect nothing, and in fact really add to the collectibility of this vintage optic).
6) The lens mount and focuses nicely on a Contax. The iris action is smooth and proper. Cosmetically the lens is in very good condition, especially considering its age.
7) The iris action is normal.
This is a bargain lens, but I have little doubt it will deliver stunning results. I've priced this fine optic way below market price. Sold as is.
