Wow thats quite a find! Easily over $1000 worth of equipment. Talk about pirate booty!
Yeah, but I'm not positive if I can get that much. Most of them have shutters that are off on the slower speeds. I don't know how much that's going to knock the price down, but I hope to get as close to $1000 as possible. That would easily let me buy all the developing stuff I plan on getting (I miss developing my own film!), a scanner, some Konica gear I want, and hopefully a better 120 camera (TLR, RF, or SLR).

If someone wants to offer me $1000 right now, they're yours!

And who doesn't like finding booty? Pirate or otherwise!

You have the lenses, now buy a 4X5 camera !
$1000.00 will not be proper compensation,
compared to the pleasure that you will
get from Large Format Photography !

No can do. I have to pick up a medium format camera anyways. I'm trying to get a Koni-Omega Rapid. That might end up costing me $200 or so plus a possible CLA.

I thought I had everything. Then at a rummage sale a few weeks ago I picked up two Panasonic 30x lighted microscopes, a can of Dektol and a Laboratory Supplies Company Hicksville NY gadget with a little orange magnetic pill. That little water-powered magnetic mixer is my find of the decade. A long time ago I had a similar electric mixer that I threw out - I don't remember why but I never used it. Maybe I was a little worried about electric mixer with all that water around. But this one just feels right. Except for a little waste of water, it is the thing I never knew I needed.

I've been looking in the junk bins of used camera stores in Tokyo the past month. I found a Canonet QL19 for 500 yen. Put in a new battery and it was off to the races. Works fine, but it didn't feel right in my hands. Last week I found an Olympus 35UC for 1,000 yen (about $12). The film plate was installed backwards (springs out) which was very easy to correct. Once again, new battery and it works fine, and it feels very good in my hands. I found out that the 35UC is the supposedly very rare last version of the Olympus 35SPn. So anyone want a Canonet QL19?

Not the best score from a flea market, but I just got a cheap HIT-type camera, A Kodak Duoflex III (to be used for TTV), and a Konica Big Mini 510-Z. $4 each.

Just picked up a Pentax SMC 35mm f3.5 in m42 mount for $2.
The case it was in had crapped all over the lens. But after a good cleaning it looks like new.

This weekend I stumbled upon a garage sale that was selling off a lot of Ham Radio gear, and I got talking to the vendor, as the time was late and traffic was light. I suggested that she would do better to sell it at a ham swap fest.

I mentioned that I had done ham as a teen, but had take a fork and chosen photography as a hobby.
I got steered to some boxes of photo gear.

For $15 I came home with:
a Norman 200B flash pack and charger with LH2 head,
about 200 mid 70's to early 80's Kodachomes that guy had shot before passing on,
a Kodak bantam safelight (or something like that), c/w green and yellow cups and 7.5w bulb, still in box
a 35mm bulk loader and about 6 reloadable cassettes,
a roll of expired 80 Plus x 20 exposure new in box,
some old Kodachome mailers for Kodak Toronto ( neat historical value to me ),
a bunch of 6"x6" white acrylic diffusers,
a complete old Kodak chem tri pack unopenned, and sundry openned envelopes,
a (glass) bottle of photo flow 200,
sundry synch cords,
a cable release,
49mm UV and polarizer filters in good shape,
and the bottom half of an old enlarger head - c/w cheap 50mm lens, red filter, condenser lens set, 35mm neg carrier and bellows, and flilter drawer. The bellows length was adjusted by turning a knurled nut on a threaded rod. I had never seen this design before.

The Norman flash pack appears quite viable. I have tested it with offboard batteries, reconditioned the electrolytic caps, and it seems ok. The 50w/s and 100w/s put out the same amount of light, but the 200w/s switch setting yields two stops more light, so I am thinking there is a fried diode in the power switch area. So the fix is to feed it newer batteries (the nicads are dated Oct 1980), and the doide will get swapped when I find one with suitable current and reverese voltage breakdown ratings. Then I will have another substantial battery powered flash for my on the road portrait lighting kit.

Yesterday I found a Rollei 35S at a garage sale for $20. It has a few dents and is missing the beauty ring on the lens. It seems to work just fine and I'm extremely happy because I've always wanted one of these things.

Heresy and a Thrift Store Find

So, other than a couple of point and shoot cameras, I've never owned or really used anything with auto-focus or motor wind. For SLRs, I've been an Olympus fan since the beginning (mid 1970s).

But I have been curious.

So here is my latest thrift store acquisition: a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 with Canon EOS EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6 lens.

$20.00 - and it seems to work fine!

Boy is this camera light! And my wife likes the strap .

I'm not really keen about all the buttons, and would really prefer having an aperture ring, but it seems learn-able.

For that price, it also included a "free" Sigma 70-210mm UC Zoom, but the aperture isn't working properly on it (viewing at f/22 is not easy).

Naturally I have now ordered from Hong Kong an OM to EOS lens adapter - for the entertainment of course.

I managed to find a Yashica T2 for $2.95 USD at a Goodwill.

It needs a new battery though. Not sure if it works. I'll find out when I get a battery.

If found a T2 at the thrift shop also, you know you got a good deal when
the battery costs more than the camera. Got it loaded with Tri-X, and waiting
by the mailbox for the batteries to get here. I can't wait !

Last fall I got a Cannon A1 with Powerwinder A2, two lenses (100-300 5.6 and a 55mm 1.4 (I think), Data Back A and Speedlight 199. Toss in the Hakuba case and I picked it up for $125 US. Really clean and gently used. And this was at the local Goodwill store. I opened the case, look at what camera was in the case, asked if it worked. The sales associate said that they thought so, it made "normal" camera sounds when the looked at it. I replaced the camera, closed the lid and took everything to the sales counter. MINE!
Goes well with the AE-1P that I was given when my brother went total digital.....

No finds so far in 2011?

I can't believe some of the stuff you guys have found, I have been here in orange county for a couple years now and I've no idea where to find any garage sales or flea markets. I must keep looking though.

My best find (so far) was about 5 years ago when I was living in Santa Barbara, I found an Olympus 35RD for $20. It was super clean cosmetically but needed some adjustments in the lens. I had a CLA done and sold it a couple years later for $350 haha.

Most recently at a goodwill store (4 days ago) I found a Pentax P3 with a SMC-A 50mm f/2 for $14. The camera looked like it was in primo shape but there was no batteries so I wasn't sure if it worked. Popped in some fresh batteries and PRESTO! I sent off a roll of Ektar 100 that I ran through it to make sure it actually works right.

When I decided I wanted to set up a darkroom I went to Craigslist and found a guy selling a "Beseler 23c and misc items" for $50. That sounded like a fair enough price for the enlarger and what I thought would be assorted enlarger accessories.

When I arrived to pick it up he told be he had found some other stuff and I could take it if I wanted it. I ended up with the enlarger with 50mm and 75mm lenses and neg carriers for 35mm and 6x6, an 8x10 easel, grain focuser, Ilford and Kodak contrast filters, a box full of expired film (around 50 rolls total, mostly FP4, but also an unopened "Tech Pak" which had two rolls of Tech Pan and a packet of Technidol LC), a 4 roll Nikor developing tank with lid and cap, assorted reels, a couple boxes each of 8x10 and 11x14 Ilford MG paper, an unopened box or 5"x75m paper, a couple of tri-chem packs, a box of Microdol-X packets, 2 small metal cans of Microdol-X, a glass bottle of Photo Flo, unopened packets of Dektol, Selectol Soft, and Kodak Fixer, 4 each of huge bottles of Ilford stop bath and fixer, a paper cutter, tongs, a film squeege, a bunch of clips, an old Kodak safelight with green and yellow caps, and 9 developing trays. There's probably some more stuff I've forgotten about too.

For $50 I filled our Ford Focus to the gills!

Went to a photo sale listed on Craigslist. It ended up being a studio that was closing. Had a good time talking to the older guy that owned it. Bought a 50mm f2.8 EL-Nikkor for $10. He had a large box with a bunch of of old 8x10 paper boxes in it, mostly Panalure, that he said I could have for free. Looked inside and saw a box that said Tech Pan. Got it home and it turned out to be an unopened box of 8x10 Tech Pan dated 2005. Since I don't have a 8x10 and just sold my 4x5, I put the box out on the market. In 3 days sold it for $300!

I did one better, Olympus Stylus with a good battery and a roll of film in it at Goodwill for $0.40.
.
You Did Well !

But, this morning I stopped by the thrift shop and picked up
a Pentax IQ Zoom 115M, with mini tripod, and case for $3.00 !

I amazed by what people consider to be worthless.

I'm debating on a craigslist pickup right now. It's 2 Canon A-1 bodies with motor drives, 5 lenses (4 of which are canon, and at least a couple primes I gather), looks like a flash, and who knows what else for $200. I tried to haggle with the guy sight unseen over email but he won't budge on his asking price haha.

Should I go for it?
