I have a business card for my 9-5 job that is not photography related. Is it OK to make a business card stating "photographer" or "photography services" if I'm not really making a living out of it? I mean once i a while people are interested and would like to buy prints so I guess I should be able to put my contacts on a piece of paper. What do you think?

Why not simply put: "Photographs"? It doesn't imply that you'll do weddings, bar mitzvahs, or anything at all specifically...just that you make photographs. And...is it okay? Well, IMHO, of course it is!

It's not a regulated profession, put what you like and have fun with it.

Contrastique - I think you should consider making your name a bit bigger or bolder so it separates a bit more from the background. I find it slightly hard to read as it is. Cool design otherwise though.
Huhum, sorry for my rather late response  but thanx for your comment.
I will surely take it in consideration after I used my 2000 printed ones first
Maybe the benefit of it not being immediately readable is that people might give it a closer look to make sure that what they read is correct...no...?

This is my latest version. I guess it reflects the b&w mood I've been in the past couple years.

Derek Lofgreen Photography Card

This is one card I use. I have different cards for different types of photography depending on what someone may want.

My idea for a business card:

businesscard_idea.png

As you can see it doesn't show any images but does make reference to technique. If I were to design a series of promotional postcards then the image would be the main feature, but I'm not sure how well photographs are displayed on a business card format, although Alex seems to have achieved a good design.

I suspect the main difficulty is trying to put across the area of photography one is engaged in.

I was thinking about preparing a "special" business card for a photo meet in a couple of days (I'm planning to offer some photo services, and will be passing some cards around), and I remembered this thread.

I took a look at some of the cards, and I quite liked some of those.

However, I wanted mine to be special - i.e. analog, developed and fixed in a real darkroom

It would have been nice to make them from a real negative, but I had to cheat - I don't have enough time.

In short, I think you'll guess how I prepared the "negative". However, the rest was really done in the darkroom - as a contact copy, developed, fixed and washed.

The second photo shows the contact prints being washed.

Next time I'll do a 100% analog thing: I'll take a cople of photos (perhaps the whole roll) and contact print the film strips, and cut them up as cards

Until then, this is a "quick-and-dirty" solution.

There are some super sexy cards on this thread, especially slightly spooky The Lighthouse and the imaginative film-leader design of wazza.
In the good old Australian vernacular, I say "bloody marvellous!", guys!
But where's mine...? Well, I'm a bit coy about revealing my private address, contact details etc unless I've actually met people face to face, which is where and when I provide that "detail".

My business card is simple and functional rather than a showcase of my work.

Most of my clients are architects and interior designers, so I just let it explain the pertinent points of how to get in touch with me and let my website do the talking.

Well, I guess since this thread popped up.. I will throw my new one up. Worked with a graphic designer friend of mine on the logo, though he only draws on paper and I had to do the translation to photoshop.

Here are the front and back of my current card. I like two sided, because I find that in the advertising business, people tend to flip a card over to check out the other side.

As part of the branding process, my website also matches the overall look, feel, and colours. I am considering getting T-shirts made to hand out to repeat clients, or for any assistants that work with me.

Ciao!

Nicely designed card Peter and I like your analog statement.
