You can still do it. Leave it... really, it's hard the first time but it gets easier. Just every now and then to remind yourself who is in charge. I spent a few days on the road recently, meaing back roads and coast line, etc. After the first day I didn't even *care* when I had no signal!! Imagine that!! By the second day, I didn't even *check* if I had a signal.... And life went on. No one died because I was unavailable, no spaceships invaded earth, emails and messages *could* wait.....

Right, just ditch the thing. 10 days ago I decided that technology and other useless things had to go. They've been screwing up my life and using up my time. Diverting me from what I really want to do. So gone are the cell phone, news (online, and the reading of all printed newspapers), wristwatch, fast food restaurants, the TV is off except for the occasional music video, etc. The internet is now only for this forum, selling the last of my gear on fleabay and here, and for research, not articles and such. Deleted my accounts in the three other online forums that I was a member of too.

You would not believe what a difference it has made. I have so much more energy, my thoughts are clearer, things are getting done. Should have done this ages ago. We only have X amount of energy and time each day of our lives. Time spent at one thing takes time and energy from some place else.

Right, right....I realize I can leave my phone at home but I was referring to the entire culture and environment of everyone, not just me. Believe me, I love it when I go to the Eastern Sierras and lose all cell coverage!

All I have is a cell phone. And I don't know where it is half the time and do not answer it the other half. But when ya really need it the value goes through the roof.

As an aside, the little program 'Freedom' is very nice. It kills your internet connection for a period of time. You decide how long. No ability to check email, get a quick update on this or that news story, etc. You can still use your computer, just not for internet things. Photo editing, writing, reading- all fine. Rather amazing how much time all those 'just a second, new email!' things suck out of a day.

Among other things I was once a CTC representative on a committee based in Grassington. Empire of deepest darkness for all mobile networks at the time. There's a dark side to there being no phone signal. As you pass through the littoral where there are masts life gets doubly hazardous. Local Fire & Rescue had loads of calls to Bolton abbey. Because that was where previously 'dead' phones suddenly came to life.........................! Cars could be seen weaving about as drivers got their e-fixes after a period of 'cold-turkey!' as a cyclist I just enjoyed the peace & quiet; no silly, "have you had PPI/According to our data you are over 55 and can claim your pension!"

Living at the cottage most definitely has its perks but it also comes with a long list of things to do that simply dont take care of themselves. Changing out everything from deck boards to light bulbs, Ive become a pretty hands on handyperson. (Im working on a small hot water issue that has me bathing in the lake until the weekend but that's another post.)

I dont know what things look like from where youre sitting but from where Im typing the mosquitoes are plentiful and some range up in size resembling small hummingbirds. Though life teaches one to appreciate quality and not quantity, some days I feel a swarm of skeeters could carry me from the car down the 55 steps and dump me at the sliding patio door on the deck. BBQing dinner last night, Id had finally had enough, and hatched a plan.

Youll be impressed when I share that I dont run the chainsaw when Im here alone, so a few years back I bought myself a hacksaw.

Knowing what I had to do to get it done, I fetched it from the shed last night. Then, once the high noon sun hit today, I slathered myself in Muskol, and hit the back hill on a mission.

Come hell or high water, I was going clear as much brush as I could to get some serious sunlight onto the hill to help Mother Nature burn them blood sucking skeeters to a crisp. Two hours later the remnants were hauled into a pile and I had gone as far as I could. I was sweaty and stinky. The good news is that there wasnt a skeeter in sight. I gobbled my lunch, cleaned myself up and worked the afternoon away at my desk.

About 15 minutes ago I went outside to see if I had actually made a dent in my task at hand. Truth is, I couldnt tell. The mosquitoes were so friggin bad that I just turned around and came back in the cottage. Guess Im gonna give it another go tomorrow. Just like preparing a solid annual operating plan, more hacking and slashing (I mean sawing) shall happen tomorrow!

YUP, the skeeter/hacksaw saga continues. Something tells me Im fighting a losing battle but at least Im committed on giving it an honest go and not pouting when it simply didn't work out the way I wanted it to.
