It saddens me that my first thread, asides from intros, is asking for repair advice but I'll do just that.

The pad of death has struck and my electro 35 is currently not thunking, although appears to otherwise be working great. I'll rush through the film in it and get it to a repair guy asap but I don't know who's recommended. I'm based in Cambridge but can post.

I have a second electro 35, which I'll test with a battery. If it works fine, I'll send both to have the pads replaced (neither clunk now, but it's got to be my favourite camera of all time!).

Bonus points if repair guy can service my 1939 rollei tlr. It's perfect working order asides from the shutter being a bit slow - not bad for a camera that's never been serviced!

Many thanks.

Welcome to Apug!

But what does "thunking" mean?

They're famous (well, not really) for having a very quiet leaf shutter combined with a hilariously loud thunking noise when you wind the film on. It's to do with resetting the shutter properly, and it not thunking means the rubber pad has deteriorated.

Mine is now thunking again, but I do wonder if it's worth sending for a service anyway as maybe it's on its way out. May as well send both to be sorted at once!

So I'll be the other way around, first post, yet to write up an intro but that will come in time!

See that you're based in the UK, read good things about Newton Ellis and although I haven't sent off my rolleiflex to be serviced, that is where it'll be sent.

There's a number of guides available to change the Pad of Death and they look easy enough although I haven't tried myself! Superb cameras and well worth the effort to keep them going

Jon Goodman sells a great deal kit complete with the pad and easy to follow instructions. I highly recommend it.

I'll have a look into Newton Ellis, as I really don't want this going down the toilet - it's such a great camera, I traded an olympus 35sp for three of them because they're not valued as highly, though one is really broken and strictly for spares.

Understand the affection. I've 2 myself and wouldn't part with them! Perhaps you could try the John Goodman kit on one and send the other off to Newton Ellis? You can practice on the spares camera first

They make a loud thunk when you wind the film on - have a look on YouTube. I'm too new a member to post, but there is a video showing the clunking while showing the innards that cause it.

I live a few miles from Newton Ellis and have had my 1934 Super Ikonta and my Oly 35SP serviced there. They did a great job on both and they are friendly people.

Thank you Paul. In decades of being busy with cameras I never came across that expression. Actually never at all...

No problem! I've never encountered it on any other camera. It's peculiar!
