Yashica Electro 35 GSN problem

I have a GSN that has suddenly stopped showing the over/under exposure light and is apparently firing on the 1/500th second setting regardless of the f-stop or ASA setting. The battery check light lights up OK and the battery is showing 6v on my multimeter. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Or should I just try to save up and have this fella sent in and repaired?
