Xtol -Vs- Mytol

The Cookbooks' formula # 25 Mytol is given to be an 'environmentally friendly' version of Xtol.

I shot a roll of 35mm TMax-Y at 250 today and would like to ask if anybody uses or has used the Mytol formula and to what success with TMax film?

Good question Bruce! Sorry but I don't have answer but I'm curious about the developer myself.

I've not used Mytol myself, but my understanding is that its environmental impact compared to XTOL is nearly identical. Both are phenidone/ascorbate (PC) developers, and so contain no metol or hydroquinone. XTOL is described in patent documents, although the commercial developer may not be identical to what's described in the patents. Its ingredient list is very similar to that of Mytol -- XTOL adds EDTA disodium, uses a bit more sodium sulfite, and uses Dimezone S rather than phenidone. (Dimezone S is a phenidone variant that's supposed to have superior keeping qualities.) Of course, small differences in formulation, including variations from Kodak's patent filings, could produce differences in results, so I wouldn't want to claim that Mytol will create results identical to XTOL. I've heard that it is pretty similar, but that's just hearsay.

I've used both and can't see any difference IMO.

I've used Mytol. It works fine, but I recommend using distilled water for it, and/or mixing it one-shot. I now brew something similar to it starting with the PC-Glycol (Pat Gainer's) stock solution.

I have a lot of PC-Glycol, could you tell me what Gainer formula you are refering to.... maybe something with ascorbic acid?

I've not used that variant myself, although I might give it a try at some point. I use PC-Glycol a fair amount.

I think what was meant is that Mytol is an environmentally friendly version of D-76. Since both Metol and Xtol are phenidone-ascorbate developers they are equally environmentally friendly.

BTW, DS-10 is a better developer and less apt to suffer from the "sudden death syndrome" exhibited by ascorbate developers.
