Xtol imho is the best general purpose developer I have used. It has everything in spades, there's really no compromise.
 
I agree. Even though D-76 is the most ubiquitous developer, XTOL just does everything well. The only thing I don't like about it is the smell!
 
Then do not sniff it. Glue smells better. :wink:
 
Great curves! Finally something that proves what I've always thought -- that TMX has more of shoulder than TMY2. Most of the internet folklore says they're the same.

That's what I found as well when formulating my own developer. Here's an example:

To avoid compressing highlights, TMX needs to be exposed accurately when developed in developers that yield these long shoulders (and not all developers do this).

Also, notice that the curve for TMY2 bends *upward* a little at about -1.4 log lux-sec in the following graph:
