I'm worried that I'd be losing something significantly with xtol

I don't think so.sctually D76 rocks for about 100 years now;hard to beat it.

Xtol imho is the best general purpose developer I have used. It has everything in spades, there's really no compromise.

I agree. Even though D-76 is the most ubiquitous developer, XTOL just does everything well. The only thing I don't like about it is the smell!

That's what I found as well when formulating my own developer. Here's an example:

To avoid compressing highlights, TMX needs to be exposed accurately when developed in developers that yield these long shoulders (and not all developers do this).

Also, notice that the curve for TMY2 bends *upward* a little at about -1.4 log lux-sec in the following graph:
