So at sometime in the future the coin collections I made as a child may actually become worth something?!?

Silver dimes (to 1964) =$1.70 (includes Mercury dimes and earlier too)
Silver quarters (to 1964) =$4
Silver halves (to 1964) =$8.30
Silver dollars (Morgan/Peace) =$18
40% silver halves (65-70, Kennedy) =$3.40
40% silver dollars (71-76, Eisenhower, collectors) = $7.30

All silver coins of low rarity are priced based on melt value, and rare ones start at melt value. Most of these coins are considered "junk" silver, but they are not all junk. Also, it is not illegal to melt pre-1965 silver coins anymore. It was while they still circulated (just as it is currently illegal to melt Jefferson nickels).

C'mon, Brian. Everybody knows a penny's not worth anything!

I mean, people won't bend down to pick up a penny, but they will to pick up a nickel. That's cuz a nickel's real money!

I read some time back that Bill Gates would not stop to pick up $100 - would lose more $ since his time is so valuable.

IMO though seeing / reading interviews with people in this caliber I think Bill actually would stop so as to give it to a needy person.
Unlike Bill Gates, I can think of many other with wealth whom could not be bothered and have no interest in philanthropy.
Some whom can be commended for philanthropy is Jeff Bezo's ex-wife MacKenzie Scott. Seems she has given away a huge portion of the $38 billion she got in the settlement.
