The gate of the 135W is 24mm x 54mm, so there is little benefit over simply cropping the standard 120 rollfilm 645 frame from 42.5mm x 55.1mm
The only benefit I can see are is if you routinely want to shoot an emulsion which is in 135 but not available in 120

Cropping in the darkroom...you merely set the borders on the easel frame appropriately...if making a 20" wide print, rather than the 15.5" vertical spacing of the easel blades you set 8.9" vertical spacing.

Ah gotcha. I'll have to find a shop that accommodates such requests. I don't develop/print my own stuff just yet :\ I figured the 135W back would be an easy way to throw some 35mm film in and get pano shots pretty effortlessly.

As I pointed out, the 135W is simply an alternative' method' that nets you nothing different from what you can expect to do with the standard 645 format film. What you can do (when not printing in your own darkroom) is simply to print to 20" width (using my prior example) -- a very standard capability of photo printing services -- and TRIM the 16" dimension down to 9" wherever it pleases you most.

The FL that you use to shoot 645 frame (prior to trimming) is the identical FL that you would used to shoot 135W...and the Field of View is identical (well, within 1% if you are being anally compulsive) for both. You'd get one silly millimeter wider image on film with your 645 back than with the 135W back!
