There are two styles, varying in the mechanism to smooth the connection of the extension to the body. One has a sort of half moon plate sliding into a cutout to suppress the stop the prevents the body falling off the back end of the base, the other doesn't.

I've got a later model 2D (1940's), and it does have the brass plate stop to prevent the rear standard from accidentally moving backward off the base. Hard to see in this photo, but it's there. Thanks!
