Want to Buy WTB: Print on glass plate from supplied digital image

Hello,

This might be an odd request, but I'm looking for someone who can help with a project:

I have an image file of a star field that I would like to make a print from onto an 8" x 10" glass plate. I am going to back-light the display, so the black background has to be entirely opaque and the stars should be entirely transparent.

Can you help? Willing to pay for your time if you can demonstrate this capability.

If you wanted a low cost option, how about printing on to acetate and then sandwiching the print between two thin sheets of glass.

Duping the image onto 8x10 litho film and bonding that film to glass might work as well.

I'll check them out. This is for work, so I don't necessarily need a low cost option. I need something that'll get the job done. 20 years ago it was pretty easy to get a precision photomask made. Not so anymore.

If you want to do it yourself you could (if I understand correctly) photograph your print as a positive transparency either with 8x10 film ( or smaller format and then print it on to x-ray duplicating film) and then sandwich as suggested or mount on glass with a transparent adhesive. Also although probably a no no for this site (go to DPUG) scan the image, manipulate as desired and print on Pictorico OHP Transparent film.

By "entirely opaque" I presume you mean passes no light?
Because most film emulsion even at Dmax is not truly opaque.

if silver emulsion dmax is sufficient, John Nanian (jnanian here) has worked with glass plates and liquid emulsion.

That's correct. What I'm really asking about I suppose is photomasking.

This is to support acceptance testing of a new product at work, so it's not for experimentation or tinkering. APUG probably isn't exactly the best place to ask, but I've had a surprisingly difficult time searching for a suitable vendor.

And I'd rather not deal with jnanian.

No they're not competitors. In fact I get filters from them fairly regularly but wasn't aware they do masking. I'll check them out.

OP if you are interested in dry plate type images glass plates to print on &c,
you will find all you need in a book called "silver gelatin" and the lightfarm..
there are commercial labs that currently print on metal and glass through modern methods
as well. less of a learning curve to have someone with experience or a commercial lab do their magic.
while i dont do masking techniques i have nearly 30 years exp. with glass and emulsion.
the website and book are great resources .

i've had success with waxed paper ( xerox )
negatives for cyanotype and retina images
it might an easy direction and be something to consider ...

Found a solution! Circuit board photomask on thick plastic base



Grandfather of the Electrical Engineer I work with on this project owns a circuit board manufacturing company, and slipped it into a run this morning. Just picked it up. The black is entirely opaque (silver halide process)...couldn't even see the sun through it.
