I'm doing some work with direct positive paper and I need a deep red safelight. I have a number of 'bullet' lamps but they all have OC filters. I also have a 10x12 housing.

Anybody have something for me?

GBX-2 filters should work for you as well, and are easier to find than No. 2’s for bullet lamps.

FWIW I tossed all my filters and put low wattage red LED bulbs in my beehives. They are extremely bright and tested safe with various types of papers as well as lith film. A lifetime supply of them costs less than one replacement filter.

Funny I found a GBX-2 5.5" in the trash yesterday. I'll mail it to you this weekend if you want.

Would rubylith work?
It might help -- but I find the "official" #2 dark red is like being nearly blind. Working with Fuji HR-T green sensitive X-ray film, my experience with the ever popular little golfball sized LED red bulb and no filter was a failure. I ended up adding Rubylith to kill off some low level non red emissions, but also dimming the light. You can inkjet print xx% grey on overhead projector transparency material to make neutral density filters.

I used rubylith in a double AA Mag light, for many years and though I was no sweeping my paper with it, it was handy in the darkroom, for under shelves searches and looking to the back of my bookcase/shelves.

Try fitting this type flashlight with rubylith, no the high powered bulb types and see if it will fog your papers, from a distance and close up for a minute or three and if it's OK there, then your safelights (which will still need testing when in place) should be safe with that material, even if it takes two or more thicknesses.

Of course, keeping a light proof card or sheet of paper, (a sheet of large exposed photo paper with rubylith would do) by the enlarger, for your current easel/paper size, would also help keep exposure down, as in my experience, I do no leave a photo sheet unexposed for more than 15 seconds, unless there is a misadventure, right as I am about to make/have made the enlargement.

IMO.

I was looking at those but wasn't sure if they would work...

Put one of the 15W Red LED party lights from Lowe's in your bullet light with the GBX-2 and you will be good to go.

I did a lot of testing to figure out what was ok to use when coating my Orthochromatic ASA 25 emulsion. I found even a GBX-2 set up like I recommend is as good as a #2. Keep it at least 4 ft from your paper or orthochromatic film, and do a fog test to see how long you can actually have the media out under the safelight.
