Per the title, looking for a Gitzo 1270 head. Anyone have a spare they'd sell? or something similar? Don't seem to be any available in the states at the moment.

I'll keep mine; found them to bethe most practical and precise
 
also keep an eye out for the 2271, its basically the same, but with a smaller platform on top. I use it on a set of 1227 CF legs and a FLM arca mount permanantly attached. Its perfect for small view cameras (AS F-Classic 6x9, Technikardan 23, Horseman VH)

Thanks- I was also looking at that one as well as the 2270, the low profile version, but they all seem thin on the ground. From what I was able to find online, the top plate of the 1270 is the exact length of the baseplate of the Chamonix H-1 I have coming, which is alluring. Obviously the QR has to be taken into account also- thanks for the recommendation.
 
Bump, still looking- Bought a 1370 off eBay Japan that turned up pretty rough, movement wise, unfortunately.
 
still looking.. got the 1370 working well, and have been using it but the 1270M sure would be nice..
 
I believe the B&H unit is a "M", is it no?
 
I sent them an email last week asking for photos to see which model it is and it’s a regular old G1270.

Anyone want to buy my 1370 and I’ll get this 1270? probably best for 5x7/8x10
 
I admit I only did a half-assed search but how different are the base plates between these 2 models? I will add that I was surprised by how light the "M" model is. I just sourced a 1370m from Japan, and I thought the box was empty.

The QR I bought allows the two screws to move so they line up with the two camera screw holes. Doesn't your QR do the same?

Bummed I missed that one- looking now, the price wasn't too bad either. The one currently available at $254+tax is a bit much.

The 1370 is about 2.5lb, 1270 is allegedly 1.5lb. What's the 1370M weigh?

I'll admit, I caved and bought the 1270 on B&H this morning... worth a shot for $60.

According to my questionable postal scale; 1370m = 2.03 pounds.
 
Do any of you have suggestions for a similar low profile 3-way head? I have been using a ball head with my Hasselblad or Rolleiflex, but possibly I could get better control with a 3-way. Another thought is a 2-way head because I do not need to tilt the cameras 90 degrees sideways. Thanks!

Yes, you will if the tripod is not exactly level. The left to right level allows you that leveling as the other allows front to rear movement. The third is for panning. Go with a three-way head. Plus, later if you get another camera you could use this tripod.
 
Well, the 1270 showed up, and it’s pretty great- better suited for 4x5 I feel than the 1370, and 700g vs 1100g.

If anyone is interested in my 1370 let me know. It works great now that I cleaned and lubed it, and would be perfect for a 5x7 or 8x10 folder…

Alan, you are right about the tripod being a bit off and the head needing a left-right adjustment. I try to get my tripod as level as possible but usually it is a bit off. That must be why Linhof, Gitzo, and other companies made leveling heads, which you mounted on the legs first. Then, on top of that, a fluid head or 2-way head could pan along the horizon without dipping. Another interesting idea is a ball head that is mounted with the ball down. Arca Swiss has a Monoball like this, and the Novoflex MagicBall is a similar idea. Novoflex's beautiful big Classic Ball 5 II can be mounted with the ball down. So many nice and expensive toys to consider.....

I wonder if I could mount my Linhof Profi III upside down? Something to consider if I can adapt a platform with a socket instead of a protruding thread.

It's a good thing I rarely shoot video with a tripod because I could never get a tripod level to pan properly. Of course the left right on a three-way allows you to adjust that tilt simply when you're shooting a still camera which is what I normally do. Moving tripod legs up and down little by little seems to be such a waste of time.

The leveling bowl seems to be a great idea. I've never tried that. How do you like it?

Try a RV level, circular with center Ring.

Or, level with your camera, the legs will never know the difference.

Bulls eye levels never work for me. YOu never can get 0 degrees, or at least I can't.

How do you level with your camera other than the aforementioned three-way head? ?
