Looking for a 5x7 back to adapt to my Asanuma half plate. As long as it's not broken (badly) and has springs, I want to hear about it.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, your Asanuma has a book-form back I think, the actual camera (rear frame) may well be too small for a 7x5 back. I bought 3 half plate backs just before Christmas, two sprig and one book form, one turned out to be 7x5 when I looked more carefully (it's been adapted to fit a Seneca City View now).

My point is that the two spring backs half-plate and 7x5 (take same dimension DDS) are about 1 inch wider than my 3 half plate cameras, it would be quite a difficult conversion to make them fit. My 3 British field cameras need backs around 7.625" to 7.8" square. The 7x5 back was 8.625" square before I repaired and extended it.

That may very well be, Ian. I'm at work (Friday daydreaming) but will measure the back of the camera when I get home. I'm pretty sure, though, that I can cobble something together, and if the price is right, it would be a decent little project. FWIW, the camera was probably bookform at some point in its life; when I got it, it had no back, and I fabricated a 4x5 spring back for it.

I have seen a half plate book-form back with a modern 7x5 DDS fitted, it was an Ebay sale by someone I know but he was making a claim that wasn't correct. I checked the spare half plate back (book form) I bought last month and that wasn't possible, I have another spare somewhere so will try and find it and check that one for you.

The idea is if the DDS (film holder) fits between where the focus frame sits then it could easily be adapted, you'd need to cut a groove and build up the sides and fit sliders or other catches ala Graflok, The beauty is the focus frame just hinges out of the way. I know it's very feasible as a 7x5 holder will fit one the book form back of one of my half plate British field cameras but I won't to keep it as original.

I'd sell you my wooden half plate spring back but they are so rare here in the UK and 7x5 are almost non existent here, which is why I'm keeping it. I want the ability to use modern holders my self :D
