Worobiec Book

Has anyone seen The Worobiec's book on abandoned buildings.
Specifically -does he discuss the toning techniques used on the photographs?

I have seen Tony at workshops and have seen him use an airbrush on many of his images. I am currently in London having hung a show in a galery that includes some of Tony's work so he may be at the opening this evening, is he is I'll have a chat with him about his current methods and post any info I get.

I haven't seen that book, just excerpts from it. However, the gentleman also has a book out on toning and hand-colouring techniques which features several of the same images used as examples. I do have that book and it is excellent. The first third discusses simple toning techniques, the second third discusses combined toning and the final third is given over to hand-colouring.

Another excellent toning book (going slightly off-topic) is Tim Rudman's guide to the subject, although this doesn't have the hand-colouring guide of Tony Worobiec's.

Seconded. I managed to pick up a copy for a fiver at the Wolverhampton camera fair on Sunday. Very well written, clear and detailed guidance along with some excellent photos.

I have a copy of Ghosts in the Wilderness and I've seen him present this series of work also. It is a book of pictures not words -and a very good one too. At the end of the book it gives a short section on technique and then there's a series of thumbnails with a very brief technical description. There are a variety of methods in play here, from untoned lith prints to a variety of toning agents to dual toning to hand colouring, some in combination. Equally a proportion of the photographs are in colour, taken by his wife.

If there's any particular image that is consuming you, I'll look up the details and post here.

Tony Worobiec wrote "Beyond Monochrome" with Ray Spence. Many of Tony's pictures are of abandaoned American Midwestern farm buildings and are spectacular in my opinion. I found his shots to be some of the most amazing examples of toning and coloring that I have ever seen. They take on an almost surreal look.

I recently bought "PHOTO ART" by Worobiec & Spence, and found it much inspiring. It does give some information on alternative toning processes [FSA etc], hand coloring photographs and combining photography with other arts. It does not stop there though, as the whole book is devoted to extending ones view on what can be done with photography. Anyways, i think it's a great book and a good read for those who wish to experiment with their photography.

You can also find an article on hand coloring photographs, written by Worobiec on the English magazine Black & White Photography, called "Oil's well that ends well", issue no. 41- Dec. 2004, page 64.
