I would attend a women only workshop if there were one in the Dallas area... there's a dynamic in mixed male/female groups that impacts my ability to learn. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not there when I'm learning with a group of other women.

Dianna,

You are absolutely right and recent studies prove out your observation and there are valid reasons for this. Presently there is a move in education acknowledging this and now as studies continue, in some high schools, students are given the gender option in choosing classes. It is proving most beneficial to both genders.

I can't believe this has caused a stir with some members. In year 8, I think it was, in boarding school our class consisted of 40 boys and only 2 of us girls for certain subjects. Sink or swim mentality and no time for complaining about rights etc... Sometimes I really would love to say what's on my mind about a number of issues that have crept up especially in the past couple of months, what would that achieve? Nothing except for hurt egos.

That's life. Get over it and move on.

Lee - I'd be over in a flash if the time and money was right! :D

Lee,
if this is going to be a women only event, does this mean you'll be making a trip to a plastic surgeon for some, err, 'corrective' surgery before you attend?

I've heard you are a dedicated teacher, but I hadn't realised your dedication went *that* far.

Got that right!
Let's see, a womens' workshop at a boys only school... Gotta be some justice in that. I don't know what we could work out here at my school. I'll put it on the desk of my office-mate and photo teacher (a genuine woman as well, no less) and see if she wants to be involved.

Maybe a parallel workshop (gender inclusive) which could run at the same time - separate but within "get to the party afterwards" distance away from the main event? This way I could be involved as well..

Thanks for the great push, Lee. Let's see what develops (pun intended)

I'd sure sign up for a Texas-based workshop! Lee is a great instructor (was particularly helpful to this totally non-tech female!).

BTW I'm the only female engineer on a team with 17 men. Not only that, but they're all also republicans and love digital photography.

As I said in an earlier post Cate if you can set something up that is agreeable to all of us and get me over there I will lead the workshop.

OK, I gotta ask, why "women only"?

I'm in Minnesota, so don't have a vested interest one way or another in this New England workshop. And I can understand how it can be intiminating for someone to be in a group that knows a lot more than they do or - even worse - THINKS they know a lot more than they do.

So I see how, in certain traditionally male dominated fields, it can be intiminating for a woman. But surely photography is not such an area. And the women who participate on this site certainly seem as knowledgeable as the men who participate.confused:

It's just so we can let our hair down and in the breaks we can stuff ourselves with chocolate

Sorry Lee, I didn't read through the whole thread, a workshop here is a nice idea.....

Oh, Cate! there's just a small pond seperating England from New England! C'mon over!!

:D I'll provide the chocolate!

If Nicole and Cate come. I'll come from Oklahoma

As a woman in New England, I'd totally go for it! Either way, shooting or darkroom, or a bit of both!

Bethe? Krystyna?
I'm in. And I agree about the learning aspects with mixed vs non-mixed groups. I'm also in charge of 2 guys and sometimes would just like some girl-talk.

I certainly hope this can be pulled together as Lee is a wealth of knowledge and a great teacher. The women will love him.

If Nicole shows up with the Chockies I'll be there even though I am not female.

Regards,
Bill

Bad case of insomnia again tonight!! I wish the brain could just switch off at times.

Bill do you reckon you could disappear into the crowd and keep up with the chatter? :D

Actually I'm seriously wondering if there's a way of making my trip worth while.

Lee do you have a timeframe in mind as yet?

Hi, I'm the future non-existent Mrs. Blaze-on...
(dusting off my wig)

I'll go..

Though I probably can't afford it, I'll book a session with you! Especially if you make it to New England!! :D

hmmm...well maybe Lee needs a support staff?? Its the chocolate I'm after...

thanks Mark but I dont think doing a 2 or 3 day workshop needs any corrective surgery. That said, if you feel the need by all means go ahead seek out your doctor.

Hi all,

there has been some interest in a "Womens only workshop in the New England area". I am willing to fly up to the area and lead the workshop if there are enough willing participants. This could be a darkroom workshop or a shooting workshop. My question is are there enough women that want to attend somethng like this? PM me or post on this thread and lets talk about it.

lee\c

PM me at lee

I'd be interested...Where? When? How much?

I will be writing something up for probably in the Spring so the weather is not so cold as it gets in the winter.

thanks for the interest.

Interesting. Just playing devil's advocate here...... A women only workshop is ok? What is the difference between that and a white people only workshop? Or in the past men's business or athletic clubs that were ruled discriminatory due to sex and were forced to allow in women. The same argument made that "I learn better when the class is all women because the dynamic is different" can also be used for race, religion or ethnicity. Bottom line is that most people are more comfortable with people who are more like them in gender, race, religion or ethnicity. If that were allowed we'd be back to segregation, granted a voluntary one. The law has stated that freedom of association does not allow racism, sexism, etc. Personally I don't care whether there is a women only workshop or not, but there is a bigger issue here and one may wonder why women who fought to have the same access as men, now prefer to exclude them.

What about Women's and Men's restrooms then ? I wouldn't mind them being gender-mixed...

In Austria, there's a restaurant on the side of the freeway that offers special parking spots for women drivers (twice as large as the "normal" ones)

Or maybe the cars are bigger - people carriers stuffed with babies, bags, shopping, dogs.........

(Whose "normality" would that be, anyway? )

[...]Personally I don't care whether there is a women only workshop or not[...]

Sounds like you do.

I suggest that discussion of the workshop specifics stay in this thread and that discussions of why we do or don't care if there's a women's workshop be taken to (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

It'd be a shame if the opportunity for a workshop were lost because the thread got polluted with trolling.
