I would attend a women only workshop if there were one in the Dallas area... there's a dynamic in mixed male/female groups that impacts my ability to learn. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not there when I'm learning with a group of other women.
Dianna,
You are absolutely right and recent studies prove out your observation and there are valid reasons for this. Presently there is a move in education acknowledging this and now as studies continue, in some high schools, students are given the gender option in choosing classes. It is proving most beneficial to both genders.
That's life. Get over it and move on.

I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not there when I'm learning with a group of other women. Each person is different. There are many women out there who will disagree with me. Just my $0.02. BTW I'm the only female engineer on a team with 17 men. Not only that, but they're all also republicans and love digital photography.
OK, I gotta ask, why "women only"?
I'm in Minnesota, so don't have a vested interest one way or another in this New England workshop. And I can understand how it can be intiminating for someone to be in a group that knows a lot more than they do or - even worse - THINKS they know a lot more than they do.
So I see how, in certain traditionally male dominated fields, it can be intiminating for a woman. But surely photography is not such an area. And the women who participate on this site certainly seem as knowledgeable as the men who participate.confused:
It's just so we can let our hair down and in the breaks we can stuff ourselves with chocolate
Sorry Lee, I didn't read through he whole thread, a workshop here is a nice idea.....
I'm in.As a woman in New England, I'd totally go for it! Either way, shooting or darkroom, or a bit of both!
Bethe? Krystyna?
Bad case of insomnia again tonight!! I wish the brain could just switch off at times.
Bill do you reckon you could disappear into the crowd and keep up with the chatter?
Actually I'm seriously wondering if there's a way of making my trip worth while.
Lee do you have a timeframe in mind as yet?
Lee,
if this is going to be a women only event, does this mean you'll be making a trip to a plastic surgeon for some, err, 'corrective' surgery before you attend?
I've heard you are a dedicated teacher, but I hadn't realised your dedication went *that* far.
Hi all,
there has been some interest in a "Womens only workshop in the New England area". I am willing to fly up to the area and lead the workshop if there are enough willing participants. This could be a darkroom workshop or a shooting workshop. My question is are there enough women that want to attend somethng like this? PM me or post on this thread and lets talk about it.

I'd be interested...Where? When? How much?
Interesting. Just playing devil's advocate here...... A women only workshop is ok? What is the difference between that and a white people only workshop? Or in the past men's business or athletic clubs that were ruled discriminatory due to sex and were forced to allow in women. The same argument made that "I learn better when the class is all women because the dynamic is different" can also be used for race, religion or ethnicity. Bottom line is that most people are more comfortable with people who are more like them in gender, race, religion or ethnicity. If that were allowed we'd be back to segregation, granted a voluntary one. The law has stated that freedom of association does not allow racism, sexism, etc. Personally I don't care whether there is a women only workshop or not, but there is a bigger issue here and one may wonder why women who fought to have the same access as men, now prefer to exclude them.
In Austria, there's a restaurant on the side of the freeway that offers special parking spots for women drivers (twice as large as the "normal" ones)
