Margaret Bourke-White
Eudora Welty
Imogen Cunningham
Diane Arbus

Sanders in trouble already! New wife / photog didn't make the list.

Emulsion magazine will devote an entire issue to this question in the next couple of months. One (of very many) that fascinates is Margrethe Mather. She was every bit the equivalent of Weston, yet he spiraled up, and she down. Curious that.

Perhaps not so curious. I consider Imogen to also be the equivalent or better of EW yet a lifetime of work often equal or better than her counterpart went very nearly un-noticed. Maybe Margrethe saw the writing on the wall?

Tina Modotti was an interesting character as well, Jim. As some may agree sometimes the more obscure photographers were the most interesting.

I respect Dorthea Lange and her work as well. (Shades of our own Nicole, eh?)

A quick list off the top of my head

Late 19th early 20th c.

Julia Margaret Cameron
Gertrude Kasebier
Chansonetta Stanley Emmons

Mid 20th c.

Helen Levitt
Diane Arbus
(I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of any at the moment)

more contemporary

Debbie Fleming Caffery
Andrea Modica
Sally Mann
Susan Meiselas
Lauren Greenfield
Joyce Tenneson
Annie Liebowitz
Donna Ferrato

A couple of women who shoot for National Geographic

Jodi Cobb
Joanna Pinneo

I'm sure there are a lot more names to add!! Women have done quite well in this field, thank you very much! :D

Sally Mann, Ruth Bernhard, Tina Modotti, our own Valerie Brown. The other woman photographers on APUG are all an inspiration to me!

Sally Mann
Berenice Abbott
Lee Miller
Nan Goldin
Diane Arbus

Fay Godwin

I must second Susan Derges, mind you I felt the work of hers on show at Photo London last week was quite poor

Vee Speers new work "The Birthday Party" at the photographers gallery stand was exquisite

as to most of the rest of the show, pretty sad really, just my thoughts

enjoy and be well

I'll third Susan Derges.

Then add Sally Gall, Cig Harvey, Rachel Brown (aka Giese), and Lyn Davis.

For magnificently pointless whimsey in website design, sonjamueller.org is worth a mention too.

Actually, Jim, she was at the top of my list!
But I was afraid someone would accuse me of
bias, so I decided against it.

Having removed Melanie from the list,
I decided further to confine my list to
Rolleiflex users. Hence no Sally Mann. :-(

Sanders.

Dorothea Lang

As well as all those already mentioned & just for starters -

Eve Arnold
Grace Robertson
Martine Franck....

Cig Harvey
Joyce Tenneson
Sally Mann
Cheryl Jacobs
Nicole Boenig-McGrade

I've had the privilege of working with Cig Harvey, Joyce Tenneson and Cheryl Jacobs.

Cheers,
Bill

I'll second Fay Godwin. I had the privilege of taking a workshop at Duckspool in 1992 that she was teaching at. Great experience. Sadly, she is no longer with us.

Also Mari Mahr is another photographer that I admire.
