My work schedule has been hell-on-wheels for the past couple of months. I really wanted to go, but I like living in a house and not my van, so when duty calls...

Had the money the time and the desire and just my luck the wife's birthday was right in the middle of the conference. As much time as she lets me out of the house to shoot, I need to keep her happy. I will make the next one as I need to find a place to call home as it has been a long time since I attended a conference (View Camera in Sante Fe at least three years ago).

Cheers!

No one asked and I thought it was a private affair.

I really wanted to go and the location was great, BUT
I had a professional conference (Vision Sciences Society) scheduled in FL during the same weekend.

My wife would not allow me out of the yard. She said "Film photography is too important to you. Do not set things back by going. You know you drive people digital."

Tell me it aint so.

Where I live, our travel is very expensive even to the rest of the US, in fact even to the rest of Alaska. As such, my ability to afford such an event is pretty much limited to my ability to combine it with a visit to family. I also have a very difficult time scheduling trips May-September as that is our busiest season. The prime attraction for me is not really the workshops or anything specific on the schedule, it is really the opportunity to see a lot of other work, actual prints, instead of the internetified digiversions of that work. I'd love to go, but in terms of timing it would probably need to be Phoenix next December or January or I won't make it to the next one either. That's not because I'm not interested, it is just financial and logistical reality.

I really wanted to come to the conference. However, I went live with my new business venture in the beginning of April. Once you become a new entrepreneur, it is pretty difficult to leave a business in its beginning stages.

Where in Tor did the club meet I didn't get the invite and still don't know where it was. From the pictures it looks like the storage room of a warehouse. Was it a walking tour? Do they allow open containers in Tor Ca?

Curt, the "invite" as you call it has been on this site for the past year. That interesting photo of an open subway car that said "APUG Conference" on it... THAT was the "invite".

The conference (not necessarily 'the club') was held primarily at Bob Carnie's gallery... called "Elevator". He has extensive darkroom facilities, meeting rooms, and galleries. It was a great time.

As to open containers... I will assume you mean alcohol... and no, Toronto is extremely stringent in their enforcement of 'zero tolerance'. That's why I brought my Scope mouthwash, and left the Listerine home.

Was it a walking tour? Oi, Curt! This was a conference...There were workshops, outings (opportunities to take photos at various times of the day/night), vendors, food, roundtable discussions, and a few social events. But mostly, it was a bunch of people who shoot film (and were able to come) getting together in an organized way to shoot film & learn new things!

So it appears that later in the season would work for most. Money is an issue so the price can't rise. Some would like longer others free film(?).
I think this is why most workshops are in the Summer. For me, way too much going on with kids, before the end of the school year.

Take care,
Tom

I had wanted to attend, but again time and distance were the biggest factors. Also, I just spent a week on vacation with my wife and could not fly abroad again right after that. The VC conference is very close to my home town, and I had thought about flying to visit my family at the same time. But, sadly wont make that one either.

Maybe next year.

I'm with Galli. It is hard enough to make ends meet these days. The conference was not an option. If it goes to Santa Fe at some point then I might think about it.

Truthfully, I think this topic is done for dinner. If you made it, great. If not, too bad, maybe next time. Obviously people make their choices based on their circumstances at the time. Beating a dead horse at this point is not productive.
Cheers,

Good Day,

SNIP...
It is time to hear why other members didn't come. I realize money, time and timing are major factors. I also know that we will often find the time and money if the event is exactly what we want.

I'd really like to hear everyones reasons for not coming and what would compel them to attend a future APUG Conference.

Cheers,

jdc

I would have loved to attend, but time, money and carbon concern prevents me from flying long distances, now if you were to hold the next in my local village hall, i'd definitely come

Because Canada is too freaking far away from here, a whole ocean and a whole sea away! The cost would be prohibitive even if I had the money. Otherwise I wouldn't miss an APUG conferance for the world! I have been mostly alone in my photography path and it would be incredible to meet people who share my passion. Plus I never had a good photography teacher and would really like to take workshops with the people that taught in the past conferance.

Exactly the same
