This is key. I see film images as "pointillistic". Not sure if this matters, but pointillism in art was very popular for a time, and is very appealing to the eye, indicating their may be an intrinsic attraction. See George Surat, Sunday in the Park. Some pointilists user finer points, and even just black dots in some cases. Pointilism may have been a reaction to photography (I am speculating at this "point").
