PS...Those Tachs are pretty cameras. We have one we check out to students. I have had to replace a couple broken toggles (front swing) and there is a good crack in the wood (no light leak) right above the knob for back tilt. Students certainly test equipmment (and my patience!)

Tachs are beautiful cameras, and so is your Zone VI! The Gowland looks so small next to the Zone VI.

BTW, I was considering getting a Zone VI 8x10 myself, until a Wehman went on sale just at the right time! It will be here tomorrow, hopefully, and I am ready with a holder, film and chemicals! I choose the Wehman over the Zone VI mainly due to the lighter weight of the Wehman - I'd like to hike with the camera.

Congratulations Daniel, let me know when you're going to Torquay and I'll see if I can give my partner the slip and you, me and Mick can do some serious shooting. I bought a new 300mm Nikkor to go with the 8x10 Tachi but the hole in the lens panel that I have is about one millimetre too small. When I get it machined I'll be set. I'll post photos of the new camera with the Shen 4x5 next week when I can access the digital from work.

Well, I have taken several 11-day backpack trips into the Grand Canyon and a 5 month bicycle trip thru New Zealand with that Gowland -- no way I could do that with the 8x10! If one put the Gowland and lens on a scale, it would be no more than 2.5 pounds.

Now with the 8x10 Wehman, a smaller pod than my Ries, and a bike trailer, I could imagine spending another 5 or 6 months bicyling around NZ! Don't know what I'd do with the wife and my three 10 year old boys though...

I bought the Gowland and Caltar 150mm new...the camera was $220 and the lens about $235...about 23 years ago!

She's a beaut, mate! Is that bubble level "built in"? That is a good chunk of glass, too! I appreciate my Fuji W 5.6/300...especially in the low light situations I am always working with under the redwoods!

When comparing I couln't see a triple extension there. The Tachi has a 330mm bellows and the Shen has 360. Is the Shen better or the Tachi when it comes to bellows extension? The Shen also has interchangable bellows which is a plus. I might get on but I saw this thread and wonder now.

Over here, even if the MD prescribes it, you have to pay for it... and I bet over there if the MD prescribes it everyone pays extra anyway to avoid the one given out by the national health care scheme.

The Tachi Triple extension has Bellows Draw - Maximum 34" - 84cm . Some piccies at Dead Link Removed

Mike that's the cat's meow, I was looking for a smaller size 4x5 though. I was thinking about the two and the Shen has an international back so I could use my roll film holder with it. I might be taking it on a long trip hence the 4x5 model.

PS, snaggs, did you provide badger with their photo on the intro kit page? I mean, is that first shot your actual camera, or a stock shot of the tachi? That's a good price for a brand new intro kit.

Walter what's the size of the lens board? What are you getting for max. bellows on it and how do you carry the camera and what do you take with you when traveling?

Meet Cherry, I built her from scratch back in 1980 when I only had a picture from a magazine to go by and worked the dimensions out from the film holder. It's made of Cherry wood and brass, all of which came from a local hobby shop including the fasteners. I made the bellows from fabric, a paper sack and a special inner light proof material that makes it light tight even today. Now I am looking at a ShenHao or as my wife thought I was saying Shit Hole. I had to explain that it was S H E N H A O not S*** H***, a camera from China. She said why would you want that when you can make one? I said, time and energy. You see she is taking me to Italy and France in the fall and I don't have much time to get ready. Don't I have a great wife?

The camera has not been opened for months and it is not at full extension. It's also dusty and needs the brass to be cleaned. I never coated it and it's a multi color brass color. Everything works as it should and there is back swing and tilt. Front swing, tilt, rise, fall, etc. and it's very light. I can pick it up with one hand when mounted on the tripod.

Why doesn't everyone have one of these...
