Of the harsh shadow shots.
Or should I say the editor who thought this worth $$$$

Like many things pictorial I would expect its deepest origin to actually be in painting.

They style has been around a long time. And editorial photography pays little compared to advertising work.
I know it's not new hence my question of who started it in fashion industry

how did they convince her outstretched leg to cast no shadow? 😀
Same angle as the light source I guess

It wasn't Helmut Newton? So it is way older?
Man Ray 1870-1976
Horst P. Horst 1906-1999
Helmut Newton 1920-2004

I think that would make Man Ray's work the earliest of the 3. His shot of Elsa Schiaparelli dates from 1931, Mr Newton would have been 11 years old.

A light was positioned to keep the leg shadow from being seen? Interested readers want to know!

The radiator barely casts a shadow, is close to the wall, while her head/hair/body & knee plus the lion's head have elongated shadows. I think the secondary light throwing those shadows is lined up with her leg. Probably some retouching too. Actually, probably a lot of retouching overall.
