They style has been around a long time. And editorial photography pays little compared to advertising work.

I think that would make Man Ray's work the earliest of the 3. His shot of Elsa Schiaparelli dates from 1931, Mr Newton would have been 11 years old.

A light was positioned to keep the leg shadow from being seen? Interested readers want to know!

The radiator barely casts a shadow, is close to the wall, while her head/hair/body & knee plus the lion's head have elongated shadows. I think the secondary light throwing those shadows is lined up with her leg. Probably some retouching too. Actually, probably a lot of retouching overall.

I hope that was humor, not ignorance. Carravaggio is known for chiaroscuro, or deep shadows and hightlights, not cast shadows. The model is evenly lit, no chiaroscuro happening there.

You managed to dig up what might be one of the few if not only instance from Caravaggio. But he certainly wasn’t the first. Robert Campin from a century earlier for example.
