Just how long do you wash the film after the fixer stage. If you use a rotary processor it is suggested in most developing kits that 3 mins is adequate with 6 changes of water with one change every 30 seconds. I do 8 changes. I do the two extra changes just because I have always done so. This is followed by the final bath on the slow setting of the motor for 1 minute. I always use tap water for the washing stage, never distilled, and I do not get problems.
Perhaps attention to fine detail is getting in the way of practicalities. This is the same for both B&W, colour and when I used E6 reversal, nothing has changed.
Even my drying procedure is simple and uncomplicated. The films are hung in the doorway of my darkroom where they get a gentle flow of air and dry in around an hour.
