Don't worry Bob, once you start down the OM path you'll have no problem selling off the other 35mm stuff to support the habit. There are even support groups - we call it "Zuikoholics Anonymous."

'Bout time I let youz guys know I'm out here reading this thread in the agony of restraint! I had serious OM-1 lust back when it was new. But alas I had committed $$ to Nikon and, well you all know the story.

Now I have absolutly no need for another 35mm camera, but like that now "classic" car you lusted after when you were young, now that I can afford one I am soooooooooo tempted!

Is there a 12 step program for camera junkies?

Yes. Drive to your nearest classic camera dealer, walk a dozen steps to his door clutching a wad of cash in your eager mit...
Hope that helped.
Yes it did. What would be even more helpful is for you to send me that wad of cash! I can supply the eager mit.

I bought my first OM-1 in 1971 and my second in 1973. Still have both -- one went to John Hermanson for an overhaul and should be good for another 30 years. They're excellent, small SLR cameras with nice lenses. Love 'em!

Got my first OM-2n in 1983. Now I've got half a dozen OM's and a bunch of lenses and my wife complains that I'm not showing any signs of slowing down. If anything, it's getting worse. God help you, Bob!

Dear laz127,
Congratulations! You committed to buy the following item:
OLYMPUS OMG, CHROME, WITH 50/1.4 ZUIKO, 99984

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

Laz:

Assuming that this particular body is as solid as the auction appeared, you have yourself a very good little camera. I have two of these bodies (while actually, I bought one of them for my wife), and they are a wonderful blend of professional functionality, and advanced amateur ease of use.

They don't have the mirror lock up, or interchangeable viewing screens of the OM1, but they take every lens in the OM line, and they have a permanent, built in hot shoe (something that the OM1 and OM2 could have really benefited from). They are also lighter than the OM1 or OM2.

Essentially, this model is the OM10, which sold in the tens or hundreds of thousands, with built in manual shutter speed control, and most of the little foibles worked out. And the 50mm 1.4 lens is a really big plus.

My most recent test shots, as posted in the Critique gallery, were shot using one of my OMGs - I have no hesitation in grabbing them to take photos in any circumstance, short of those situations where the OM1 is clearly superior (mirror lock up) or the TTL flash metering of my OM2n or OM2S makes a difference.

I don't know what Nikon equipment you use, but I would be willing to bet that, when you are reaching for a small, light quality camera to carry with you to enable you to take advantage of opportunities, the OMG will find its way into your hands more often than not.

Now lets see you resist the other lenses and accessories!
(You should see how compact my 24mm f 2.8, 35mm f 2.0, and 85mm f 2.0 with Olympus T20 kit really is) :D

I'll look for a link for the manual for the OMG (OM20 in Europe) and PM it to you if I find it.

I had a little fear of "the sanity of the morning" when buyers' regret can consume one, but no, I woke up strangly at peace with the world; kinda like a vital piece of me long lost has at last been found.... Om om om........

Just landed myself a FREE OM2n! A friend who works in the local hospital said they were chucking an old 'microscope camera' out and would I like it? They're not allowed to sell them as they are a health trust apparently. Turned out to be a mint, hardly used OM2n complete with original box, manual and microscope focussing screen (but not, unfortunately, a microcope adapter). I've used OM cameras for 20 years and have several lenses, many of which were in a carrier bag I bought at a boot sale for £1.00! (28mm/f2.8, 50mm/f1.4!!!, 135mm/f3.5, Sigma 21mm, Sigma 70 - 210mm).

Who say's photography's expensive!

Not so fast. I gots me an OM-G with a metering screen stuck and a mirror that comes halfway up and stops.

Maybe I'll be looking around for the OM haters no-can-use-group.

Check the battery(ies) ... I've not used the OM-G, but that's the first thing I would check.

If John Hermanson is lurking around, he may be able to suggest what the problem is.

Don't worry, you'll stick with us!

I agree. That's what they do when the battery runs out. David.
uh oh. Didn't even stop to think it was one of those cameras. That's the problem with youthful fantasies, you grow up and learn the ugly truth. My very first camera was a Yashica TL-Electro-X. When the battery died your shutter speed became fixed at 1/1000. Mine failed at some particulary inoppertune time (I can't remember what, maybe a flying saucer had just landed) and I've had a hate of I'm-a-paper-weight-without-a-battery cameras)

Never even thought to wonder if my youthful dream camera was one!

My 8x10 Korona works perfectly with a dead battery!

Nope, your dream is intact. If I recall correctly, you were dreaming of an OM-1. All that happens when the battery runs out on an OM-1 is that the meter needle stays at the bottom. I have often used OM-1's with no battery at all for night/astro photography, etc. As you build your OM collection you'll find that they each have their niche.
