My grand dad was Calabrasi and Noni was Abrutsi.

Chernobyl

I reckon I can outrun the gamma rays ...

Forbidden kingdom of Lo Mustang is my number 1 destination and I'm planning to do it in 2-3 years time. Just need to save wad of cash for permits and porters. Bhutan, Mongolia. Amazon tribes, few of the more remote and inaccessible islands in Indonesia. Iceland. Africa, no particular country there yet. I need to do more research. Next year it would be Europe, visiting the continent of my birth for the first time in 23 years.

I can't figure out where to go for my fall vacation with the family. The options are:

1. Guilin, China (landscape heaven)
2. Pingyao, China (Ancient Chinese city, well preserved)
3. Hong Kong, China (Been there 23 times...never tire of this great city)
4. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is my personal preference, but the political situation there flares up from time to time, with lots of riots in the city. A shame, really.

Where would I like to go?

Arizona and Utah.

At the moment I'm happily tootling about finding satifying subject matter to tide me by...

one of the things that got me into large format photography was
a course i took in college on armenian architecture ... ( they invented the free standing dome,
built buildings out of tufa stone and carved / made ornate relief banding decoration on the buildings,
and most likely had a huge hand in the construction of what is now known as hagia sophia &c )
i also studied architecture and for almost 30 years i have photographed olde, historic, ruined buildings and archaeological sites foe work, and promised myself that someday i would travel to what is and used to be armenia with a 8x10 or bigger camera, hand coated paper and glass plates
and photograph as many of these churches and monastaries as i could, before they were all gone, or the folks who are in charge of their well being dont allow the public to go there anymore &c. historically
armenia was about 5-10 times its current size and went from where it currently is now, across anatolia to the persian coast. a lot of what used to be a vibrant collection of churches and monasteries ( like ani (the city of 1,000 churches), or the churches near lake van and countless others
on mountain ledges, on islands, throughout the tigris / euphrates valley ) lay in ruins because a variety of things happened over the years
that i really can't get into here in this post ( feel free to google it yourself if you are interested ).

anyways, if i get bored outside my doorsep and photographing locally, clive, i wouldn't mind going over there .. before it's are all gone.

Ani is on my list. I also want to do a rail trip following the Silk Road across China, then continue on into Kyrgyzstan to see Tash Rabat, then on to Tashkent, Samarkand, and Ashgabat. Maybe finish up at Baku in Azerbaijan.

tash-rabat.jpg

I would also visit Colombia, specifically Medellin, Bogota and Cartagena.

Peru is next - can't make up my mind where I'd want to visit beyond the obvious of Qusco and Machu Picchu (I've seen and read about some pre-Inkan ruins on the north coast of Peru, and the Peruvian Amazon is another possibility.

Switching focus, I'd also like to hit Eastern Europe - Budapest, Prague, Bratislava, Dubrovnik. I'm pretty sure I've gone over 10, but this is a fantasy list so I'm not worried about precision.

Most photogenic places that I have visited: Istanbul, small Thailand villages, and Morocco. Places I did not visited but I think they are photogenic - so they are in my list: India, central Africa, Georgia (country), Mongolia, Japan.

India is a photographers dream land. It is impossible to imagine a more colorful country. Even the semi trucks hauling freight around the country are painted the most beautiful colors. And of course, the food there is just wonderful. But India is full of enormous poverty and that often gets right in your face in THE most unpleasant way. Very unpleasant.

Japan is also incredibly beautiful. I'm not crazy about the food there so often starve, but there are enormous photo ops everywhere you go.

oh well, that's the story of most of the world it seems.
not much one can do .. just got to live in the present i suppose, and try not to forget the past ...

yeah, ... ani is pretty impressive, there was one church there called "the wedding cake church"
concentric circular walls stacked up, one on top of eachother with a fresco'ed vault and free standing dome.
above the front door of the church had a carving of the architect ( i think i am remembering right )
presenting a model of the church to the king he made it for ( or maybe it was the king presenting it to the Catholicos? )
both kind of smiling, long curly hair ... kind of fun  i think it is pretty much gone now .. just rubble.

there is another church called akhtamar ( church of the holy cross ), on an island in lake van i studied when i was a student ...
the whole church is banded / completely covered in carvings and relief of biblical scenes and stories,
pretty mind blowing. a lot of the other churches are carvings here + there but not everywhere
... ( i think there are pix in the wiki if you are interested )

just the same i don't think i will ever be able to go, so i will just dream of it all, and thumb through
my old text books, the photographs are beautiful hand made vintage xeroxes of vintage photographs
