Where can one get a Nikon rangefinder serviced these days? Ive never had to send in one before so this is admittedly a novel search, but google doesn't return too many results. Honestly I'm not sure if the issues I'm having are repairable anymore either. The camera in question is a SP, the rangefinder is quite dim and also recently began moving vertically out of alignment. Additionally the frame counter seems to have become loose somewhere internally as it spins around but still functions OK. Any input or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!

Try site sponsor Zack's Camera Repair. He worked magic on my Leica M5, and no-one wants to touch that camera!

You might want to try Authorized Photo Service in Morton Grove, Illinois. They used to be the Nikon service center for the Midwest. Good folks, they've done work on rangefinder lenses for me in the past, as well as Nikon SLR bodies. A number of years ago they were still working on Nikon S2 rangefinders, not sure if they still are, but worth a call. (847)966-4091.

Also, you are in Wisconsin, I'd talk with Don Goldberg of DAG Camera Repair. He's in Oregon, Wisconsin and he's does top notch work on all types of rangefinders. He specializes in Leica, but also does Nikon and Contax rangefinders. He can be a little busy, and therefore hard to reach, but you might want to give him a call (608)835-3342.

That should give you a place to start.

Best,
-Tim

Don opened a Nikon S2 Zack's couldn't. Zack's said the screws were too tight and he didn't want to go further. Don opened the camera just fine and did a great job CLA'ing it. Turn around was about 6 weeks.

I managed to get ahold of Don, they’re still taking SPs so that’s where I’ll send it. Ironically DAG is less than half an hour from me too, its nice to shop local! Thanks for the recommendations!

Great choice. I've had him work on both my Leica and Nikon RF stuff. Kiitos in Japan is the best if anyone reading this lives outside the U.S.

The screw on the side of the nameplate for the SP is very difficult to get out. You need to use a little lighter fluid or something to clean it, and an exactly matched screwdriver to get it out. I learned that 15+ years ago. ANYWAY! Very happy to hear that DAG tales this one. The vertical alignment has a hidden set screw to hold in place, found once the nameplate is off.

I uploaded a PDF of the manual that I found 20 years ago to dropbox, and provided the link here. If it does not work, please let me know.

Just an update here. I needed a repair to my SP and just reached out to Don (DAG). He said he’d work on it, so it’s in the mail today!

I recently acquired a Nikon S with a shutter problem.
Other than parts supply issues, is there any reason any experienced camera repair person wouldn't be able to repair it?
Specialized tools, magic unicorn voodoo?

I acquired an SP a few years ago that DAG had serviced. It’s perfect.
