I am looking for the semi stand article by sandy king. This is turning into a frustrating search.

Can someone point me to it?

I am also looking for any articles dealing with semistand and how to find the correct times etc...

Hi Mark - I tried to search in the Articles section for "semi stand" and "sandy king", but the search engine kept throwing me out of the Articles and back into the general APUG forums, even when using the search field on the left sidebar that would lead you to believe you are searching within Articles.
Maybe someone can help with this.

You would probably get an answer more quickly and possibly directly from the author, if you used a more descriptive thread title than "Where is the article?"

Title updated.

It's in the "staining developers" articles: (there was a url link here which no longer exists), titled "pyrocat versions and mixing instructions."

I had the same problem, George. I suspect the article is not at APUG, if it even exhists. I have gone through almost all of the posts that show up when I search semi-stand development. I Have found almost all of the answers to my questions. I was just hoping the article would shed some light on the possible problem of streaking in skys. I have an idea of how to avoid it, but I need some corroboration.

Do you mean like this?

Agfa Copex Rapid in Bluefire developer.
I would be interested to know more of the cause of this. Some say it's due to phenidone others suggest inadequate agitation for the first 2 mins before letting it stand.
This is my worst example but it shows up right thru the film in areas of 'almost' constant tone, such as skies.

That is what I have read about Murray. I have also read that folks were not getting the streaks with vertical standing film. I am curious about why it happens as well as how to avoid it. With the cost of film rising I have no desire to go messing up sheets of film if I can avoid it. Trial and error is for rich folks. I need to eliminate as many places for screw up as I can. I also need the benefits of semistand and stand development.

I suspect that the major reason you are unable to locate an article by me on semi-stand development is because I have never published one anywhere, either in print or on line. Over the years I have commented to some extent on this method of development in various threads, and mentioned it briefly in an article on staining developers at unblinkingeye.com. See http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/PCat/pcat.html

There was also a very long discussion on semi-stand development on the AZO forum some four or five years ago. Steve Sherman, who also participated in those discussions, eventually wound up publishing a couple of article on minimal agitation development in View Camera, and you may be thinking of his articles since they are the only comprehensive ones I am aware of to have been published in the contemporary literature.

Although semi-stand development is capable of some very interesting results it is also a fairly risky form of development that requires close control. I personally use a modified form of semi-stand that involves four agitation periods that I refer to as minimal agitation. Semi-stand, by my terminology, is when the film is only agitated twice during development, once at the beginning, again at the mid-way point.

Thanks Sandy. I was beginning to think you had not done an article. I saw a few references from people saying they read your article. I will piece together what I can and then start asking lots of questions.

Kind of weird. I have also seen a few references to my article on stand development and had begun to ask myself if I had in fact done one.

Reputation is kind of like credit. Once you get a bit of it people want to extend you more and more of it, even though you have done nothing to earn the extra!

Mark,

Steve Sherman had a pretty good article and thread on minimal agitation. This is probably close to what you are looking for: Click for (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Hope this helps,

I think we're going to have to nominate Sandy for the most influential article never written on APUG.

At the risk of enduring the wrath of the saner population of APUG, maybe it was deleted...(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

With apologies, ( :D )
