hi everyone,
I have been orientating on the 4x5 field camera market for a while now.
the budget is not really high, around the new price of a shen hao 4x5.
Movements I am interested in are all front movements, and back tilt and swing. Back rice and fall seem not really essential but maybe someone can add something that will make me feel differently.

the shen hao seems to be a good choice, has plenty off movements and gets alots of positive feeback.
But it is a budget camera, so I guess in some ways it must be less of a joy then more expensive camera's.
the toyo 45field seems nice, but has no back movements.
every now and then a linhof technica 3or higher seems to leave ebay under 700 dollar.
One other brand is horseman. the horseman woodman is cheap, but I have heard not much about it.
the horseman fa45 seems really nice, but I can not find any info or prices or stores that sell them, does anyone have a link to an internet store that sells the horseman fa45?

many thanks, game

thanks nick!

maybe some more info on the horseman camera's would be nice, the internet is full of shen hao artciles but regarding field cameras by horseman there is not a lot of info.

the fa45 seems magnificent, but is really expensive. Really an end station.the hd45 seems ok too I gess, but has limited movemets, could someone add something on the hd45?

the woodman seems to be THE alternative to the shen hao, though it lacks back rice and fall. It is really light 3 lb, and costs about the same.
Has anyone experince with it?

thanks game

Dear Game,

I tested one some 10-15 years ago for the Brotish Journal of Photography and recall it as a very nice little camera. though alas I have forgotten almost all the details.

Cheers,

Roger

The main Horseman dealers (for used equipment, VH, VH-R, FA, HD, etc) are Midwest photovideo, Igor Phogography equipment, KEH camera and e-bay.

www.keh.com
www.mpex.com
www.igorcamera.com
www.ebay.com

I got my VH-R from Igor, electric grip from Midwest, multiple Horseman lenses from KEH, and my FA and other Horseman lenses from e-bay.

I had been watching for Horseman FA on e-bay for about a year and 3 came up for sale in very good condition from $1500-$1000USD.

The only current field camera Horseman offer is the Woodman.

I bought 3 Horseman woodfields for the university. They are very nice light cameras. Simple, well constructed and sturdy. I have to admit that I have never used one myself, but I have demonstrated them many many times. We had a Tachihara wood field first, but pretty as it is, it did not fair very well in the hands of the students. Hardware (knobs) would break, wood split, etc. The Horsemans have held up much better to the abuse of first-time student users.

Students have managed to lose a knob or two on the Horseman, but that is the only damage so far. I would not call the Horseman an elegant camera, but very functional. When I get to work today, I'll haul one out and see if there is anything else I can come up with to add.

Both cameras would last a single-owner his/her working life.

thanks for the additional info.
I think the shen hao is the way too go for now, also because of it movements. But maybe can some FA45 horseman user tell me the movements in degrees?
I can not find that iunfo on the horseman website since they indeed only list the woodman as a field camera.

Thanks!game

Toyo field cameras do have back tilt for sure, and possibly a little shift. I don't have it in front of me to check the shift. I don't use shift. Also, there are many used ones on the market and lens boards are easy to come by. Solidly built.
