Where are the photos?

I just bought a Tachihara 4x5 w/210 from Badger and what I want to know.. where are the photo's to inspire? What is really lacking for people like myself wanting to get into 4x5 are the photo sharing forums like Fred Miranda and gear reviews, articles..

Is this something I havn't found yet? For 35mm I'd haunt Fred Miranda and Bjorn's Naturgraf to name a few to get my fix on what various stuff did, techniques to try, etc etc.

This is the main 4x5 forum I've found.. where are the photo's to inspire and learn from?

Just one other thing... you only use an apostrophe to indicate posession (the photo's size) or as a contraction (the photo's on the mantle). Plurals never use an apostrophe. Sorry... can't help with 4x5 photos, but I'm hot with grammar!

Subscribe to APUG and have a look at the galleries where there are thousands of images produced in all formats by all skill levels and sensibilites.

When I was brand new here I looked at every single one of them and it was inspiring. Now I make a point of viewing every posted image in order to keep up.

They're not all to my taste and they don't all spur me on to improve technically or aesthetically but even the least of these inspires me because someone else is enthused and working at it. It helps keep me motivated.

And the images that employ processes that I don't use are valuable. I've tried and adopted practices as a result of seeing things in the galleries. And I've been made curious about things I might one day try.

Posting to the galleries has gotten me used to being brave and sharing my work, which is important for me.

Many of the photographs in the APUG gallery are LF. If you watch the forum over time, you will start to recognize the folks who routinely use LF (or ULF). Look for screen names like Scootermm, JSS, Flying Camera, doughowk, Mark Sawyer, Amund, Sanders McNew and Monophoto.

I have accumulated a set of bookmarks for web sites of photographers who specialize in LF. Again, this is something that takes time to do because you have to actually visit each site to see what the photographer's process is before you can add it to the LF bookmark list.

Finally, as Chuck noted, the folks who post in either the Large Format forum or in the Large Format section of Photo.net usually are all LF photographers, and while those are forums (meaning talk rather than pictures), there are occasionally illustrations. More importantly, those are a good source of web links.

Bottom line: there are many inspiring LF sites out there. It's up to you to look for them.

Well, the Original Poster does have a point - it WOULD be great if there was a way to easily see LF photographs - there is no such place on the Web at all. You have to either know who shoots LF, like on APUG or find the very rare picture thread at the LargeFormatForum. If at least one could add a tag to a picture in the gallery to mark it as LF and then have a search criteria - it would make life easier. What do you think?

I'm all about colour 4x5 landscape photography. If you like what you hear then jump over to my website for some inspiration. Nearly all of my current work is taken with 4x5. Some images desire more mobility with my 645 and older work is taken with 35mm. When viewing an image check the category number endings. If it ends in 45 it was taken with the 4x5.

The information in the Gallery has a place for mentioning Camera, film etc. for each photograph. Most folks use it so that you can easily determine the format and much other info. if not, you may ask the photographer in the comments any questions regarding the photo. Most are pleased with your interest and are happy to respond.

You could also look in the APUG LF/ULF forums. People posting there will probably have LF photos in their galleries.

You can search the galleries for format size or process. The data isn't consistent enough to give you a comprehensive result, but it should give you an idea of some of the LF shooters here. You could also see who posts in the LF forum and click on their names to see if they have a website or any photos in their APUG gallery. You do need to be a subscriber to see the APUG galleries.

Hey Daniel,

You took my advice! Glad I was able to get you over here from that horrid thread on FredMiranda.

This is the best place I've found for getting inspired by other photos from LF photographers. You have to be a paid subscriber to see the galleries, but it's not that expensive and it's well worth it. Quite often when I see pictures I like here I go on to look at the personal gallery of the photographer.

On largeformatphotography.info there is, perhaps, more concentrated expertise in various areas of view camera shooting, but people don't share their photos too often. There are occasional sharing threads.

Finally, I'd consider getting some print publications like View Camera magazine and Lenswork. There are some amazing ideas in both publications.

The APUG gallery is searchable. For example searching on "4x5" will return over 1,000 photos. As long as people used "4x5" in their description it will produce a search hit. I heavily use the gallery for researching film/dev combos, for example I'll search on "txp320 xtol" and examine the hits.

Hehe, she was actually correct. While conventionally it's not objectionable for you to stick an apostrophe next to a plural number, it's grammatically incorrect. The plural of 4x5 should not have an apostrophe.
