When did you last promote film use?

I had an intriguing conversation recently with a fellow film enthusiast who got so fed up with people coming up to him and asking to have a look at his latest picture that he stuck a small photo to the back of his film camera and shows them that.

Karl Lagerfeld, the fashion guru of Germany (who is also a photographer) was recently seen doing a photo shoot in Berlin. Digital? Not a chance! He used medium format film!

Yesterday! I told the groom of a wedding that I will be using film for his wedding next week. He was delighted at the prospect of receiving quality b&w prints.

whenever I bug one of my friends to let me take their photo. They are usually more than keen. I gave my friend an old Nikon F I fixed. The other day while surfing I saw a guy with a minolta and a 400mm and told him that it was cool he was shooting film.

I'm not really sure about your side of the world but here in Singapore, I notice film slowly picking up.

Largely thanks to Lomography, film is cool again.

Not to mention i am looking at many people buying Nikon FMs.

Last week, I have a friend who asked me some recommendation on buying a camera. The guy wanted to improve his travel pictures from the digital point and shoot to a higher level. As most of the people, he started looking at entry level DSLR. We then talked about features and specs of different brands and models. He started then to be very interested in the new Olympus E-P1 from the size point of view. However, the price and the availability of the product were difficult to swallow. Moreover, the fact that this specific kind of product is expected to evolve quickly in the coming months was really putting him on the wait mode. But then, knowing that his father has a AE-1 with 50mm f1.8, 135mm f3.5 and the nice 35-70mm S.S.C, I suggested him that he could use that kit meanwhile the digital market is evolving. He was then very pleased with the idea. So, next time he'll pass by his father place, he will be grabbing that AE-1 out of retirement and my next order of film will include some for him.

I leaved the discussion with the happiness of having opened the eye of a newcomer on the alternative to digital. Time will tell if he'll stick to it, but at least, I'll try. And by the way, I didn't told him that digital will be evolving for ever

I also am finding out, in a big way, that most are becoming tired of the digi "look" and are migrating back to film by the droves.

Last Friday when I took a hike and lugged a 4x5 with me. I was not very inspired by the landscape because the sun was straight overhead and frankly, while I live in a beautiful place, many of the trails I hike on look similar so nothing was grabbing my attention.

Anyway, when I got to the top of the hill, I set the camera up. After walking a couple of miles uphill I was gonna get something--anything! I put on the polaroid back and fiddled around. A guy came up and talked about the camera (it is a Cambo Wide DS) and recognized there was something missing, namely, the bellows. Later a woman came up. "What kind of polaroid do you have in that back?" Boy was I surprised. She recognized a polaroid back! Wow! I showed her what I had done and she wistfully said, "A bunch of my friends have been telling me I need to try 4x5." And then sheepishly, "I only have a D80," as she walked away.

If people ask me why I don't shoot with digital, I tell them that It's just a passing craze like hula hoops, yoyos , and deely boppers.

Our camera club decided that they would create "interest groups" - portrait, macro, birding, etc. So I'm now convenor of a Film interest group and dragging people out of the woodwork, looks like we'll be running some howto-print-B&W sessions in the club darkroom soon.

I last promoted film use yesterday. It was fun too, as I taught a novice how to load 35mm film onto a stainless steel reel, into a tank, preparing the chemistry, and finally processing the film all the way to wetting agent and hanging to dry.
In one week from yesterday, we will meet again, and her job is to shoot and process one more roll of film between now and then. And then we'll make contact sheets. And then we'll practice this some more. And finally we'll print.

Tonight after dusk, shooting storefronts with Polaroid 667 and the RB on the streets of the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood, I had a discussion with a passerby about the camera. His girlfriend is looking for "one just like it" and he wanted to know where I got it (KEH).

I got a new toy today, so went downtown to take some photos. My camera is a Pentacon Six 6x6, with a Zeiss 180mm Sonnar lens. This thing looks like a bazooka. I walked around on Fourth Street (in Winston-Salem), taking photos of the crowds, tall buildings, etc..

No way anyone is mistaking this East German artifact for d******.

Today at lunch. A colleague saw my rolleiflex and remembered she had one from her father, but thought film in 120 was no longer available !!!

So I told her where I buy it in Paris, and gave her one roll of HP5. Hopefully she'll use it and may get back to the right side

I was shooting a basketball game with my Elan 7 last week. I was using a 400 2.8 lens. I had a guy come up to me & say that's a nice camera. I bet a camera like that could shoot some nice images for national geographic. I just chuckled & walked away. You see a film camera still to this day creates impact when scene in public.
