F2.. I don't need no stinking backup!:D

ahr you shuuurrrrrre? i got three more F2s to back up my first one

i think, with today's prices, the concept of a "good enough" body as a cheaper backup to the main workhorse is entirely out the window

I frequently have more than one camera with me, though they are rarely of the same lens mount. So, no backup, as such. I only had one camera fail on me while shooting, the shutter on a T90 started acting wonky but continued to fire. I got some of the most interesting pictures out of that failure. I haven't yet had it repaired; when I get time to play some more I'm going to take that camera out again and see what else I can get out of it.

A friend I was shooting with one day had a somewhat more serious shutter malfunction. He was on the third frame of the second roll in his new-to-him F4 when the camera made an odd noise and simply stopped working. Removing the lens we saw the shutter blades dangling from one track, the rest bunched up and bowed. No chance of a field repair there!

I never really think of having a back-up as such. I often carry two film bodies, one for colour and one for BW, e.g., Pentax LX and MX, or Pentax ES and ESII, and then sometimes a 120 folder for fun such as an Agfa Isolette II, or even a TLR like my Lubitel II...

Similar to womble, when travelling, I carry a Minolta X-570 for color and a X-370 for B&W, similar in feel and function but won't be mixed up by appearance. Along with that goes a Zeiss 6x6 folder for a little extra pocketable fun.

I carry a heavyduty 35mm camera out in swedish lapland. Nikon F5 or F4s. No realy need for a backup then unless i happen to drop it in a lake or river when fishing. Had a Nikon L35awaf whith me once for rainy days but picture quality with slides is to bad.

Backups is what digitalshooters needs all the time. Backup camera, backup battery, backup computer, backup memorycard, backup harddisk.

Actually i never thought of any need of a backup camera before digitalcameras came up.
If i carry a second filmbody it is not a backup, i just have different film loaded in it, or maybe just want to switch from wide angle to telephoto fast and easy.

Strangely enough, I use digital as my backup. I'm using mainly Pentax cameras so I have a Pentax digital I'll bring along for very important jobs. On personal work, sometimes the digital comes out as it provides a certain amount of flexibility which I find compliments my film cameras.

Usually I have two 35mm cameras and a 645 or 6x6. I'm starting to include the digital as the second 35mm just so I'm not schlepping 4 cameras everywhere... tried it. Not fun.

What bdial said. I've enough cameras, but, frequently, I'll just take one with a lens with me. When I go out of the area, or am partaking in one of the Seattle Flickrites meetups, I'll load the Domke with some gear.

Right now, it's one of my F2AS bodies, usually with a nifty-fifty (a 5-screw lens mount 50/1.4 AI lately) hanging on the front and with Ektar 100 loaded.

Not sure what got into me, but I actually traded away a camera for a lens today. Picked up a really clean 24/2.8 AI Nikkor, along with a MB-20 grip, so I could shrink the F4s into a regular F4.

Isn't a "backup camera" usually the one that's been left at home ?

I used to do a bit of work for hire, including weddings.

So I tend to bring a backup body (where I have more than one) or an alternate camera whenever I go anywhere where I would be disappointed if I have problems part of the way through the day.

I rarely need it, but sometimes enjoy the extra flexibility - say when my main camera is the RB67, and I decide to take some snapshots on 35mm.

For my cameras that permit use of multiple backs, I always take an extra back.

With 35mm my main camera is a Pentax LX, the backup is usually a fully mechanical Pentax - I pick from MX/KX/K1000 (whichever is empty at the time). If there's water about I might take my Pentax zoom90-WR compact instead.

In medium format I backup one P67 with another (also giving me the choice of different emulsions).

I have an M6 with a biogon 35mm. When I travel I also carry my Ricoh GR1v in case one of the cameras breaks.

What do you carry as a backup?

LF? Nothing.
MF? Carry several at a time so no need of specific back up camera
35mm? Don't use it more than once every couple of years...

Got same or similar bodies for back up. Often I carry two bodies with me with different film and lenses which makes things faster.

Om4t 2x
F3 2x
Gw690ii gsw690ii
Zeiss ikon bessa r or canon vit
4x5 I would have any if the smaller format cameras with me

And backup if all else fails is my iphone.

sorry, i had something else written but i just realized this is the 35mm forum and what i wrote had very little to do with 35mm ( earlier post too )
i dont usually bring more thsn one camera with me ...
i have a few 35mm though ...
typically i run through the speeds and play with the lenses
to make sure they work ... if they are troubled they go for repair so i dont need a backup ... and if a camera fails when i am out snd about i see it
as a sign not to photograph ... im not usually places too exotic ...
although if i go away i might bring a few things, not so much as backups
but as different views ... ( and fewer or more exposures or has a pinhole cap )
