What's wrong here?

Hi guys,

What is the vertical line going through this image on the left? It is not on some of the 36 and it moves across the film so sometimes in the middle and sometimes on the side.

Yes the X-700 has horizontal travel shutter.

Yes, it looks like you have a shutter issue, 1 curtain is not moving as it should. To me, it explains why you have different densities across the frame.

Could it be uneven development, kind of looks like it. Was the film not sitting right in your spiral? Of course it could well be the shutter, you can check this by opening the lens to full aperture and pointing the camera at an even light source with the back open. Fire the camera at all speeds and you should see an image of the full frame. Typically shutters have this problem at the higher end, 1/500th or 1/1000th, and if the shutter is capping it is quite obvious.

This is interesting, because with the other Minoltas I have there are layers in the curtain, the Minolta x-700 has only one piece.
It is not capping at faster shutter speeds because the speeds used in taking the pictures with the fault were also much slower.

I tried watching the shutter and I can see the full frame at each speed I think. I also think the film was loaded correctly. I followed instructions carefully again.

I think I can't repair this myself.

Looks like shutter banding. I've seen this on my Kiev 88's at high shutter speeds. Either due to gunk in the shutter grooves, or uneven spring tension, the shutter blinds aren't staying the same distance apart across the frame. The higher the speed the worse it gets, as the delta becomes a larger percentage of the moving slit.

Needs a tune up. But first try it at the X-sync speed.

Grease turned to wax on the shutter bearings...
If the fault is not consistent across the frame.

Access may be difficult with a SLR.

Probably as cheap to buy a new camera as get a shutter repaired/replaced.

BUT

if camera hasn't been used for a long time, then firing a hundred or so times using different speeds may loosen things up but I rekon problem will return.

that sounds good to me. i have other ones to shoot with anyway so it is ok but i had a soft spot for this. i might be a replacement one in the future. they are not exactly expensive.
