I'm an experienced printer but I would like to learn more and explore how others print to achieve different looks. What's the best book?

Thanks,

Puma

Yeah, I'll be the one to throw it out there. Ansel Adams' "The Print". Indispensible.

Tim Rudman - The Photographer's Master Printing Course
Black & White: Photographic Printing Workshop by Larry Bartlett and Jon Tarrant

These are the two which I regard highest when it comes to printing.

"Lootens on Photographic Enlarging and Print Quality" for techniques they don't teach anymore. It was in print for so many years and so many editions that prices start at $0.01 on Amazon/Abe books.

My recommendations:

"Way Beyond Monochrome Ed. 2" - Lambrecht & Woodhouse
"Creative Black and White Photography" - McLean
"The Elements of Black and White Printing" - Graves
"Black and White Photography Workshop" - Blakemore
"The Photographer's Master Printing Course" - Rudman

These may be a bit dated on specific material recommendations; but the Lustrum Press "Darkroom" & "Darkroom 2" series provides insights from a collection of past masters.
More current, "The Art of PHotography" by Bruce Barnbaum is a must have.

You mentioned achieving different looks. For general printing, all the recommendations are great (esp. the Larry Bartlett and Bruce Barnbaum books). If you really want different looks, you should get a copy of Tim Rudman's toning book. It is really quite amazing and back in print. It may be only available from Tim's website, though....I'm not sure.

I would strongly suggest the previously mentioned books by Tim Rudman on printing and toning, excellent work, a must have in your collection.

Cheers

Lootens has been the go to source on enlarging for at least 60 years.

Gentlemen, thank you.
Form your suggestions I picked up a couple of books I was not familiar with:
"Lootens on Photographic Enlarging and Print Quality" and "Darkroom Printing" by Gene Nocon.
Just a couple of dollars each from Alibris.

I would skip Barnbaum as well. Too personal and opinionated. Works for him, but probably no-one else.
