good thread ...

my favourites are

1) michael kenna www.michaelkenna.net for his amazing vision
2) Fay Godwin www.faygodwin.com for all-round amazing work
3) barry thornton www.barrythornton.com although I dont i find his pictures overly exciting, i admire him for his technical expertise and the amazing ability to share without sounding overtechnical or confusing - sad that this wont happen anymore.
4) Gordon Stettinius www.eyecaramba.com for his incredible toy-eye

there are loads more and too many to list

It's already been linked so I won't add another  Robert Capa not only for his war pictures but also his time in Hollywood.

Although I do not shoot portraits, and this photographer has never 'influenced' my photography, I have always admired the portrait work of Yousuf Karsh.

His most famous is probably his wartime portrait of a defiant Winston Churchill.

Most of my heroes are no longer active.
Eugene Atget - Just because he knew exactly where to place his tripod.
Edward Weston - Simultaneous simplicity and complexity in his composition.
Walker Evane - The FSA Walker Evans because of his ability to capture the sense of place.

Me, of course, because I can't wait to see what I am going to do next.....

I have a couple of photogs on my list:

The brave Dane Per Morten Abrahamsen

The fetish freak Dead Link Removed

And because I'm on my way into taking pix of kids I study Dead Link Removed alot. She's GOOOOOD

That was my three cents...

Morten

Inspiration hmmmmmm. In many ways I've been inspired in one way or another by every photograpgh that I've ever seen and that has touched me in some way.

But to name a few-George E. Todd, amoung others in BW
Simon Marsden www.marsdenarchive.com in IR.

Being primarily a large format portrait photographer, my list would have to include:

George Hurrell
Clarence Sinclair Bull
Eugene Robert Richee
Laszlo Willinger

I know, hollywood portraits are full of lighting taboos for the classic way of thinking, but these guys had chops! (not to mention great gigs). It was the work of these guys (and others of the era) that inspired me to move from medium to large format format for portraiture.

For portraits - Jane Bown, Cheryl Jacobs
For landscapes - David Noton, Colin Prior
For prints that make me swear (long and loud!) - Les McLean, Tim Rudman, Cheryl Jacobs

Paul Strand
Edward Weston
Harry Callahan
Arnold Newman (even tho I am not a portrait photographer - I just love his work)
And I have to say that Francesco's work has been inspiring me to start lugging my 4x5 equipment out to look for worthy images again.

For people pix: Avedon and Arbus

For landscape B&W: Minor White, E. Weston, John Sexton

For color landscape: Galen Rowell Mountain Light Gallery, and Robert YOUR pictures in the gallery are inspiring me to pick me up up some of that Velvia and chase the light, so you're on my list too (lucky you! )

I am interested in learning what photographers inspire you in your work. If possible, please provide website address is available.

Photographers whose work inspires mine, in no particular order of influence:

Albert Renger-Patzsch
See also: Fallen Angel

Brett Weston

Christopher Burkett

Aaron Siskind

Michael A. Smith

Raghubir Singh
Couldn't find much on the web in the way of representative work. These are but a poor reflection of his brilliance. Dead Link Removed is an unqualified masterpiece.

Joe,

Thanks for the kind words, but I sure don't deserve it. I'm just lucky to live in such a beautiful place as Hawaii.

The results so far are great, I've really enjoyed seeing all these new websites and the work of photographers I didn't even know about. I'm curious about some of the choices of our friends from downunder (Australia, New Zealand) would make.

Still excited about images...

When I think about still lifes, no one beats Paul Caponigro. His work is by far some of the most amazing I have ever seen.

For landscape work? I am still thinking.

There are so many who inspire me to go out and shoot and for as many different reasons. To name a few who spring to mind and in no particular order.

Horst.
Karsh.
H-C-B
Erwitt (Love the dogs)
Mapplethorpe for the flowers
Weston
Stephen Dalton (High speed flash)
Adams
Eamon mccabe
Brandt
Bailey (even though he's sold out to Olympus or canon?)
Tina mcclelland (Her self portraits are very thought provoking.)
Hipgnosis (Album covers)
Doisneau

And the list could go on. and on

As much as I admire many photographers here I'd like to mention Cheryl Jacobs on the list. I can't put it into words but her work with children has a special something that makes it stand out, to my mind at any rate.

Cheers

Martin

Besides those already mentioned (Adams, Ed & Brett Weston, Evans, Sexton, Michael Kenna, Barry Thornton) I'd include:
Dorothy Lange, Gordon Parks & especially Clyde Butcher who enabled me to realize that there's more to Florida than flowers & pretty sunsets.

Jay Dusard is my favorite portrait guy. Aaron Siskind is my favorite influence from early on in my photographic education.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with John Fielder. http://www.johnfielder.com/ He is a LF landscape photographer from Colorado. I know he has been doing workshops on the South Island; he did one this past March in fact. You might contact him if you are interested.

Thanks Roteague - I am a little familiar with his work.

There were just a few B&W Printers and artists I should have mentioned:

For their technical ability and knowledge
Les McLean
Dr. Tim Rudman

For knowledge of materials and ability
Steve MacLeod (outstanding)

All have very good books

I have not yet seen enough of Micheal Smith or Paula Chamblee's work.
