Good question!
I have no problems with Nikkor lenses and while Leica lenses can cost many times more than the equivalent Nikkor lens one suspects, including myself, that they must be sharper with less distortion …!

Not necessarily a valid assumption. The laws of optics are the same , no matter who makes the lens. Ask yourself which company has a bigger R&D budget?

The Nikon F mount has a film-to-flange distance of 46.5mm. In order to focus to infinity on a Nikon F camera, the adapted lens needs a film-to-flange distance that is greater than 46.5mm, plus some thickness for the adapter, so that its film-to-flange distance can be maintained. There are very few 35mm film camera lenses that meet that requirement (see https://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/mounts-by-register.html for a chart listing film-to-flange distances). Probably the most common lenses that will work are T2 mount lenses, many of which will have lower image quality than Nikkor lenses, but YMMV.

Very good information indeed, and looks like I’ll be staying with Nikkor lenses unless Voightlander gets any recommendations…!

I have Zeiss Olympic Sonnars in two focal lengths with adapters for Nikon which replace Zeiss mount. However, both are very heavy chunks of glass and brass. I also have the Nikon version (Nikon tweaked lens from 2.8 to 2.5).
Many early lenses for Nikon were Zeiss patents acquired by Nikon after war. This does not ignore Nikon’s impressive lens development. Also, Zeiss and Nikon’s original company had prewar business relationships.
I use both Nikon and Leica cameras because each has its own advantages, but not because of lenses.
