Just traded for a 100mm f2.8. I am really surprised by how compact it is. It is just a hair larger than my 85mm f2.

Just joined the group here... most recent purchaces? 21/3.5, which is a neat little lens, and a 50/3.5 macro which should be here tomorrow.

Allan Swindles

Just arrived, an OM-4Ti /50mm. f1.8, yes, yet another 50/f1.8, but at silly price, too good to miss. So far, it seems to be a good buy, but if I find it does need a CLA and light seals, it would still be a snip.

Just picked up a 50mm 2.0 Macro in very good condition. Fantastic lens!

Ron O

The 50mm f/2 macro is still on my want list. Envy you. The 90mm and 50mm f/2 are the only Zuiko macro's I don't have. Some day.

Just joined APUG and this group (hooray for OM!).

I've had an OM-1n (black body) and 50mm f/1.8 since they first hit the shelves in Brisbane in 1979, and never stopped loving it. Then I added a Sigma 24mm f/2.8, which is a brilliant lens (couldn't afford the Zuiko f/2.8, but to be honest I don't miss it). My wife eventually acquired an OM-2SP, but I never liked it as much as she did (couldn't get used to the spot-metering system, and it chews batteries like there's no tomorrow!).

Recently I discovered the joys of the used market, so in the last year or so I have added another OM-1n body (chrome) and some additional Zuiko lenses - 135mm f/3.5, 200mm f/4, 75-150 f/4 zoom - all second-hand, in great condition, and at bargain prices (the zoom was £19, I jus couldn't pass it up!).

Confession time - I also have a Pentax Spotmatic (yes, the M42 screw-mount body) with Takumar 55mm f/2 and 135mm f/3.5 lenses, also used at stunningly low prices. Not only is this another great classic like the OM-1, but it has sentimental value for me as my fist proper SLR (not counting a short-lived Praktica clunker). It works perfectly, but I don't plan to use it a lot, promise!

Allan Swindles

Another OM-4Ti body, that's 3 now but again at a very attractive price. I really must stop, I have the king and an heir and now a spare.

Welcome greenbank, have your 1n bodies had the battery conversion?

greenbank

"Welcome greenbank, have your 1n bodies had the battery conversion?"

Er - what battery conversion? Both of mine are using the PX-625A alkalines, which fit very nicely; I change them once a year (just as a precaution - they haven't run out on me yet). As far as I know this is the battery they have always used; I just wander into a camera shop (or a battery shop) and ask for "some more of these, please." Then I plug them into the cameras, and everything works just fine.

What am I doing wrong that I don't know about?

mopar_guy

The meters in these were designed for a mercury battery that is 1.35 volts and an alkaline battery is 1.5 volts. The meter will read wrong if you use an alkaline battery.

greenbank

Oh.

I was aware of the mercury/alkaline voltage difference. However, I assumed that the OM-1n, being at the time a "modern" camera, had a bridge (regulator) circuit in the meter like Pentax Spotmatics, so there wouldn't be a problem. I also thought that the MR-9 adaptor was a purely physical/mechanical item which enabled smaller alkaline batteries to fit securely in the battery compartment.

Strange thing is, although I have never tested my meters for technical accuracy, they have always seemed to be pretty accurate and effective to me. Now I'm worried.

As far as I know, neither of my OM-1ns has been modified (and certainly neither has an adaptor in e battery compartment). I will have to look into this further.

Allan Swindles

greenbank, I too came to 35mm. in addition to my medium format gear, but not until the introduction of the OM system. I could never see why a camera needed to be so big and heavy to produce a so much smaller image. My first camera in the OM system was, I believe one of the first introduced into the UK, an OM - 1 non - MD around 1974, (so my wife tells me, we were in the trade then), which I still have, ( both the OM and the wife), but as a specs. wearer I never could never get correct exposures, due to light entering the viewfinder via the eyepiece. In my case the answer was the OM - 2, used mainly in auto mode.
But back to the question. You are not getting the best results from your cameras if you are not using the correct batteries. You need the modification or the adaptor. You will be surprised at the results.

greenbank

Allan, I've already taken your advice and got a couple of MR-9 adaptors from Small Battery (great service, great website too). I was planning to report back once I had processed a roll shot with the new metering regime, but you were too quick for me.

By the way, for anyone else following this discussion, there is a lot of good info on Karen Nakamura's website (http://photoethnography.com/ClassicCameras/batteries.html).

A f2.8 135mm with caps and case is even now wending its way to me from KEH. Must ...... control ....... GAS........:whistling:

Recently bought a Zuiko 21mm f3.5 and a (2nd) 24mm f2.8. -I was wondering if my 24mm Zuiko was a lemon in that it seemed a bit soft wide open. So I picked up a 2nd one. Now not only can i not see the difference between the two, but I cannot see any softness in the first one either. Hmm.

New here, so a great big HELLO from Luxembourg!

Bought my dream camera from my student times, an OM2n at last. Never could afford it, but now I have one with 50/1.8 and 28/2.8 lenses.

Had it CLA'd so that it's nearly like new, and I must say that it's as gorgeous as I remember it, fondling the camera in the stores way back when....

I'm anxiously waiting to finish ma first roll of Portra

My 135mm f2.8 arrived KEH. Nice! It would nice, though, if Olympus put the filter size on the trim ring of the lens, as many others do.

I went by Wings Camera here in the Atlanta area and Mike, the owner, removed the stuck filter from the 28mm that came with the OM 4 I recently bought. He took the lens in the back and returned in a few minutes with the lens, all cleaned and sparkly. No explosions, odd sounds, mystic incantations. I bought a 49mm for the 28 and a 55mm for the 135.

Let's hear it for bricks and mortar stores! Wings is just over 100 years old, and a fine source for used gear and service and advice.

Hi
Bought an Elicar VH-Q 90mm macro recently. Normally like to keep to Oly stuff but couldn't resist the lens at the price it was. Have put some old film through it but wasn't good as the film was so old the colours had bleached. The Elicar has good reviews but it will have to go some to top the Oly 50mm 3.5 I have, which for sharpness is just insane. It's one of those lenses you just love as it makes a numpty like me look good. Bought the Elicar to see how the 1:1 compares. Have an Oly 28mm 2.8 & 3.5 but am looking for a good condition Oly 24mm 2.8., if anyone has one for sale? Also looking for any of the more exotic Oly lenses 90/85 F2 etc. My favourite lens is my Oly 100mm 2.8 (close second my Oly 200mm & 50mm 1.4) and am getting into my new Oly 35 SP RF, which is unbelievably sharp. What 35mm colour print film do you guys think is best for Oly lenses? I tried some black and white with my OM1n but was expensive to process. Where do you guys get your processing done? Have just got an old 55mm 1.2 and am getting it serviced. Have heard the bokeh is a bit bonkers but haven't used it yet . Sorry for all the questions but have been an Oly collector/user for a while and have been learning slowly, by my (many) mistakes. regards, OMChris

Just picked up a very near mint OM4 with 50mm f1:8 for £5. Got it home, put batteries in and it seems to work. Next step a film.

I bought a VC Nokton 40/2 in OM mount. It is beautifully made, focuses much smoother than any of my Zuikos, and is optically a great lens as well. The position of the aperture ring and focusing ring are opposite a typical Zuiko, and the focusing action is also opposite of a Zuiko. VC obviously made these lenses by adapting their Nikon F mount lenses, so the positions of focusing, aperture ring, and direction of focusing match Nikon rather than Zuiko. Since I have a collection of different cameras and lenses, it doesn't bother me too much. It may be a bigger issue for long time Zuikoholics.

Ron O

Haven't added much new to my OM collection lately. Rounded out my 72mm filter set. Now need to work on the 100mm filters. Finally acquired a 1000mm f11 Zuiko. Now to get out to use it.

Having acquired my Dad's old Franka Rolfix 120 folder, I started getting the bug for a return to analogue photography. Then a colleague at work was selling an OM-1n with wide-angle and telephoto lenses - not Zuikos unfortunately. Bargain price for the lot and it all seems in decent condition. Now I hanker after the f/1.4 standard lens...... One thing that really bugs me about average digital cameras is the lack of a really fast lens - best of f/3.5 on the Canon bridge camera I've been using. I always liked the ability to get really narrow depth of field. I can see the f/1.4 is around on E-bay so might only be a matter of time.

Now, about that Canon 7 rangefinder with the f/0.95...............

OM-2S Black. I have also picked up an Olympus strap, eye cup and leather camera case.

Got a deal on a 50mm f2 macro. Man thats a nice lens.
Also got a OM1 in black, nice but I am looking for a pristine one.
