Good morning;
I feel so fortunate with my 35 mm lenses. I actually feel that I have just about anything I really need for them. Oh, it might be nice to have a 24 mm for the Nikon F, or maybe even a 20 mm, but I do have 28, 35, 50, 55, 58, 105, 135, and 200 mm now for it. For the Minolta bodies, they range from 16 mm to 1000 mm. It might be nice to have a 7.5 mm fish eye, or a real MInolta 17 mm f 4.0 rectilinear in place of the Tamron 17 mm f 3.5 rectilinear, but there is no longer the feeling of a "need" for them; just a sort of "it might be nice to have" kind of a feeling. Am I getting jaded? Is this feeling normal? Should I be seeking the counseling services of a Professional Board Certified Camera Merchant to see if there is anything that can be done about this feeling? Can it be eliminated or at least reduced to a level that I can live with?
Of course, it we go to the 2 & 1/4 Square or the 4 by 5, then there are still some needs. It would be nice to find a 45 or 55 mm, 120 mm, and a 250 or 300 mm in a Pentacon Six mount, and for the 4 by 5, a 150 mm and a 300 mm would be a nice addition to the 90 mm WA and the 210 mm portrait lens that I have now.
The last 35 mm lens that I received was an 85 mm f 1.7 Rokkor to go along with the 85 mm f 2.0 Rokkor already here. It was nice, but the feeling of triumph was not there. It was not at all like getting the 35 mm f 2.8 Rokkor Shift CA last year. That was a feeling of accomplishment. Finding a Tamron 300 mm f 2.8 for a nice price was also enjoyable. Using the Tamron 300 mm has also been fun. It is much more tolerant of atmospheric conditions than the 1000 mm lens. With the 1000 mm, you start to notice every movement of the air and every thermal between you and the subject. Finding the right weather conditions to allow the use of the sujper long lenses has taken much of the enjoyment of having them. Again, perhaps I am becoming jaded.
Finally having a "system" of lenses that allows me to choose just the "right" one for a specific application has shown me just how specialized most of those lenses really are. There is a lot to be said for having a simple kit with just three (3) lenses.
Will I buy more lenses? Probably, but most likely in MF or LF, and it is looking like there will not be too many in those categories. Maybe I am getting old.
