I would guess it's a multiple exposure back for glass plates. Each time the cassette gets cycled a new plate is brought into position. Is there some sort of springy mechanism inside the back?
Those were glass plates, they came in boxes, and were loaded in a "cartridge" which allowed to take 10 or 12
My grandfather had one (Verascope) and I have seen the results, 45x107mm plates , but never saw it working and only on a shelf
