I've got an old lens that takes an air bulb shutter release. How does this work exactly and where can I find the right bulb and hose to make it work? Thanks!

Air bulb shutter releases can be bought which screw into a standard shutter release thread. Like this: Dead Link Removed

Cut off the threaded end and possibly with a bit of modification, it would probably work.

I made one out of a piece of surgical tubing and a "mucus-sucker-from-baby-nose" purchased for cheap from the local drug store. It actually works. Every time I go to the doctor I do envy the real nice bulb/tubing on his spigmomemometer.

Another inexpensive source....

are the anti-freeze or battery acid suckers available from your local auto parts dealer for $5 or less. Usually well made and will last a long time. I've used them on two rebuilds I've completed.
