For those interested in the history of photography, I highly recommend "Print the Legend" by Martha Sandweiss (A Yale PHD, professor, curator). It is a wonderful academic work (rather than a coffee table book) on photography and the American West, and how the two grew up together.
Of course the "Family of Man" is a must have for any photographer -- buy a first edition for dirt cheap on Amazon or Ebay and then be moved.
Hats Off - Jason Bell, OK it's portraits of celebrities but I like the style and the concept. Everyone is shot wearing or with a hat as the theme running through the pictures. The concept is that the celebrities are raising their hat to those who have overcome the problems of mental health.
I've recently purchased Les McLean's book Creative Black And White photography, and while I haven't finished it yet I think it will become a firm favourite as a reference work. I also have the 3 Adams' books (The Camera, negative and print) which I would have listed as my favourites, but I find Les's book to be written in a more approachable style. So another shameless plug
I have a lot of beautiful photography books, and I'd be hard pressed to pick just one. I peruse all of them from time to time for inspiration. Having said that, I recently found a small book at Photo-Eye by Phil Perkis called "Teaching Photography: Notes Assembled". He was a professor of mine some twenty years ago, and it was great to find this little book. It takes me back to his class; he was a great instructor, and a great influence on my vision.
