My old favorites, like Agfa Pan in 4x5, Panatomic X in 35mm are long gone, except Plus-X. I am getting back to B&W and a darkroom so I will be starting over. Will try Kodak including the current T-Max and Ilford films. The comments about curling, emulsion problems, etc., keeps me away from the other stuff.

Low speed: Across in Rodinal
Medium speed: Tri-X 400 in HC-110 or Microphen (when pushed over 800)
High speed: Delta 3200 in Microphen (or HC-110 if I feel grainy)

This thread was started 3 years ago. I wonder how many people have the same favorite film now that they did 3 years ago. For me I have to say it is Acros since my freezer is full of it. In 8x10 I would say TMY-1.

I keep using the same films - Fomapan 100 and Adox CHS 25 - in 13×18cm and 5×8" sizes respectivelly, and still like them a lot.

For roll films, my preferences have shifted towards Ilford FP4+ and HP5+, the later being most versatile - it's incredible, it can be shot at EI 320 when there is plenty of light and grain is minimal. On the other hand, in very poor light shot at EI 3200 it gave me results I liked a bit better than Delta 3200 @ EI 3200 (I develop all my films in Rodinal). (If you're interested, look at my latest additions on my website - the portraits of jazz musicians).

So if I had to choose only one film in rolls, it would be HP5+.

I've experimented with all sorts of films over the years, but I keep coming back to FP4+ and HP5+ -

you can do so much with them

Another vote for Ilford:- delta 100 used in my 6x9 camera gives wonderful smooth tones and fine grain with loads of detail. Seems easy to develop - at least, I havn't mucked it up yet!

Favorite 125 speed film: Verichrome Pan in D-76 1:1. Love the tonality, the sharpness and the grain. Fortunately I still have about 100 rolls left in the freezer.

Favorite 400 speed film: Tri-X 400 120. Shot alot of it originally but switched to Delta 400. Went back to Tri-X and much prefer the tonality for shooting on cloudy days.

For 120: PanF+, hands down. Love the film's sharpness and its tonality.

For 35mm: A tie between HP5+ and Tri-X: Versatile and forgiving.

120 - some old Tri-X from 1980 I have processed in Diafine at box speed. I will have to find something else when this batch is gone I am sure.
35 mm - I guess it would have to be Kentmere 100 since that is the only one I have bought in large amounts so far.

Kodak Tri-X 400
Ilford HP5+
Ilford FP4+

Speed, grain, tonal range

It seems this thread gets resurrected every few years.
