What is this "tintype" camera in Buster Keaton's "The Cameraman"?

Last night I saw the 1928 Buster Keaton film: "The Cameraman" in which he plays a newsreel photographer (using a hand-cranked 35mm camera). Prior to getting hired at the news company, he works the street as a tintype photographer using a camera that is even described in the film as a "cocktail shaker". Anybody have any idea about this device?

I know you didn't ask about it, but the hand-cranked motion picture camera is a Prevost 35mm made in Italy...
