What is this. I am at a loss to what it is.

It seems to have a viewing thing, an interal mirror, plus an adjustable magnetic base.

Thank you!

a viewfinderthingy for a 4x5 camera?

Okay, so when you look through one side, there is a hole in a frosted piece of glass. You can see the circle printed on the other glass in addition to a rectangular frame.

There is no way to adjust the size of the frame. There are no markings to indicate what lens it is set for.

I am wondering if it some sort of macro type focusing device?

It is a focus aid for enlarging. You place the base on the paper, orient it such that the ring is projected by the enlarger light in the marked center of the frosted glass, on which you can then focus your image - using a loupe for better focussing if you like. It is quite nice, since you can also focus in the edges of your paper.

Goodness. Thank you so much. That makes perfect sense.

I would have never worked that one out!!!

I actually thought that this was the alien autopsy adapter for imaging into the body cavity of Thing 1 or Thing 2

It is a focus aid for enlarging.

It is more than that:

It also got an adapter (to place on the viewing window; seemingly missing here) to take a Gossen Lunasix (the model still without attachmens) for spot metering on the projected image.
