What is this leitz object?

Found a bunch of vintage camera items at junk sale today. Can't identify what this silver leitz equipment is for. It has optics inside. It also has a spring loaded button that could possibly notch the edge of a film. Anyone know what it is called or used for?

I bet I know what it can be used for...

You look at your negatives with it... When you see one you would like to print... The window opposite the punch tells you the frame number (you write that down)... You punch the frame...

Later you can easily spot the selects.

It doesn't have any markings as to model number. It would seem to attach to some other piece of equipment as shown by the slots on the top and bottom. There was a card with "Focomat" written on it in the bottom of the box, but that seems to refer to another part in the box. Also, it doesn't attach to the zoomf or doorx.

Ummh..I don't know but Leitz made a zillion gizmos for scientific work -- for microscopes and stuff. But one thing I am pretty sure of -- it won't work with your plastic cameras. But I could be wrong.

Focomat is a Leitz enlarger model. I agree with Bill. It's a negative, or slide viewer.

Makes perfect sense to me... I've got a shot I just printed, one of two taken, and I could see under the magnifying glass which was the right one... but life-size I had a hard time telling them apart. I guessed correctly anyway when I put it in the enlarger, but a notcher might have made the work less a game of chance.
