what is the greatest power winder noise...

please forgive the boys and toys nature of the question..

i was shooting today,i have a contax n1 a nikon f6 and a nikon f4s.
all the cameras have a very lovely positive fire and transport sound.
but the f4 i think makes the most perfect noise,a little brutal maybe but a sound that seems to instill confidence.the other thing that has surprised and impressed me about the f4 is it's backward and forward compatibility,with really old manual and modern autofocus lens.

No power winder manages to be that quiet. Alas.

I think the Hexar AF had an autowinder that was near silent (or, at least in silent mode) but i don't have one so i'm not sure (i'd like to though).

My Polaroid 232SL is pretty quiet. Or, at least when i'm using it it's quiet enough i can't hear it over "Who just took a picture?!"

I think the F4's winder sounds like a sick coughing cat. And it's not just my camera...they all sound like it (IMO)!

Anyways, my favorite winder sound has to be the Nikon F100. It sounds the way a :rolleyes:REAL:rolleyes: camera should sound like.

Also, any kind of medium format power winder sound make my ears happy. Especially the Bronica power winders. They sound like trains...quieter though, of course.


Edit: Does the Polaroid SX-70 film eject sound count? I get chills down my spine every time I hear one of things go off.

MD-4 running with a just off the charger MN-2 Ni-cad pack, lock the mirror up and let it fly. Truly awe inspiring, the tack-tack with that shutter is so sweet. The spring loaded snapback of the MD-12/11 is cool too, and is the 'Girls on Film' sound creator.

i think you need too feed your cat some cream,maybe it does not like the chinese kodak ultra your giving it.
try some kodak solar flare patrol film,the cameras love it.

The sound of a Leningrad firing (A Soviet 1950'-60's spring motor-driven Leica M semi-clone): The spring motor itself makes no noise, but the loud "Clack! Clock!" of the shutter cocking and firing sounds like a machine gun being loaded & cocked...
Enough to send people within hearing range dodging for cover!

I can't say that I have ever heard any of those cameras, with the exception of the SX-70.

I own and use two Nikon Fs, with F-36 motors, and they make a "clack-whirr/squeel" sound when they trip. They command respect...at least from their owner!

Too bad all these cameras were probably built before Brushless DC motors came into widespread use. These motors are basically silent. They are used in things like quiet computer fans- where the only sound you hear is from the movement of air.

It's not the motor alone.

If winders were supposed to be quiet, why do Digitals on TV sound like an F100 or my OM Winder 2? My D200 does sound kinda wimpy......

brushless motors,digital cameras konica hexar stealth we don't need these stinking things.
we want brutal full throttle analogue noise,the lovely sound of an estar base film shooting at 8 fps then jamming.thats what it's all about

I love the sound of the Olympus MD2 on the OM-3Ti. 5 FPS of "snick, snick, snick, snick..." Quiet enough and fast enough that if you aren't paying attention or are not watching through the viewfinder during firing, you're not quite sure that you actually took a photograph.

Well, among the arsenal behind the locks here are a couple of Minolta X-700's with the MD-1 Motor Drive attached. At 3.5 frames per second with a 36 exposure roll of film, that is 10 seconds of music.

What was the question? . . . Oh, yes. Well, yes, it is about $ 25 to buy and get a 36 exposure roll of color film processed and printed. I had forgotten about that. But it did have a nice sound while it lasted.

I've never really worried too much about my cameras being quiet. I guess its all dependent on what you shoot and over the years my main subject has been motorsports. Compared to a F1 car passing 30ft in front of you any camera is quiet!
That said, my favorite motor drive sound is that of my two Canon T90s. I'd expect its because of all the years and all the rolls I've run through them but I love the sound. My Nikon F4S is OK but firing off a T90 just puts a smile on my face.

Another vote for the Nikon F3's MD4 & MN2 nicad combo. Sounds so crisp and very different to the sound made when running off of alkalines. My other two motor driven camera's, a Nikon FA /MD15 combo & a Nikon F5 don't even come close.

as much as i like the unique sound of my rolleiflex 6002...

it's hard to get the sound of a nikon f2 w/the md2/mb2 combo outta my head!!

I agree, but most of the sound comes from the mirror. The film moving makes very little noise.

Why do the shutters sound like a squeaky Canon A Series shutter ?
